Reminder: hate rots your brain. Unfortunately this remains true even when the thing in question is odious and you have objectively correct reasons for hating its guts. You've got a find a way to continually step back, breathe, get it entirely out of your head and love something.

hey all i dont know what authorsdaily dot com is? but they have an "Interview" with me posted that i - never gave - is full of lies - has my wrong pronouns - is full of things i dont do - or would never say? so i emailed them and told them to take it down but jfc, i am tired

Human-sounding chatbots could only have achieved such popularity during an epidemic of loneliness and alienation, and every day we watch them worsen that same epidemic beyond what would otherwise have been possible. They're not just gas poured on the fire of our isolation, they're a full-on BLEVE.

Every day is a struggle to keep faith that good still abides in humanity, that anything decent and right will survive these times and that our efforts are not entirely in vain, and yet that faith is always rewarded.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

"The Publisher may not use artificial intelligence in any manner in relation to this Work, including to reproduce, translate, narrate and/or produce art for the Work without the Proprietor’s express permission, nor does the Publisher have the right to sublicense others to use artificial intelligence in any manner to reproduce, translate, narrate, and/or produce art for the Work without the Proprietor’s express permission. Furthermore, the Publisher will not use cover or interior artwork generated by artificial intelligence.

"In addition, the Proprietor expressly prohibits the Publisher from using the Work in any manner for purposes of training artificial intelligence technologies to generate text, including without limitation, technologies that are capable of generating works in the same style or genre as the Work. The Proprietor reserves all rights to license uses of the Work for generative artificial intelligence training and development of machine learning language models. The Publisher will use best efforts to include a limitation in any sublicense of the Work prohibiting the use of the Work for training and developing generative artificial intelligence technologies."

Something hard about the present moment is that incremental reform has been so utterly discredited as an idea. We are assured that enshrining a human right in law takes generations and yet we witness how stripping it away again takes maybe a year

looking at the difference between the American No Kings protests today and what’s going on in France, Albania, Italy and Japan, and cannot hep but think of this particular quote from Kim Stanley Robinson’s Red Mars:

30k is life changing money. Let me speak from my material reality. In the olden days when I went to university 30k wpuld have covered a major portion of my tuition food books and housing costs for the 4 years. Kids whose parents didn't have that money had to borrow it. Well off Kids didn't.

Screen shot text:

I don't think 30k is a life-changing amount of money.

Median American born in 1980 will have 2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earings.
