I won't bury the lede: Friday will be my last day at the @idahostatesman.com. For the past five years, I’ve dedicated myself to learning the ins and outs of the criminal justice system. I’ve covered everything from breaking news to the state's highest-profile criminal cases.

It's a quiet but necessary part of my job: making sure every case we write about is followed through the system: “ If I’m naming someone in a story, their life is now being changed." Spoke with @courtwatch.bsky.social about how McClatchy's mass layoffs will impact legal coverage.

The Rabbit Hole: Covering What McClatchy Will Miss

With the private equity-owned newspaper chain laying off 90 reporters, we look at the court stories they’ll miss.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Idaho will lose many of the journalists who held leaders accountable, uncovered shady businesses and documented the state’s successes. All while McClatchy dives deeper and deeper into AI.

WHAT’S GOING ON? McClatchy first cried poverty after laying off 13 of 22 journalists at the Statesman. But changed its tune when pressed by multiple unions. The hedge fund-controlled company now admits it can afford these journalists. It’d just rather spend its money elsewhere.

We know your community — because it's ours too. Because of a decision made by corporate executives, there will soon be no one to tell you what's going on with education, transportation & so much more. And our journalists will soon be out of work. Here's how you can help them:

A Monday morning thread of all the incredible work my co-workers/friends have done. People don't always think "great journalism" when they think about Idaho but they should. Read on for great pieces you may have missed 🧵

Ten of the Idaho Statesman’s reporters — more than half the staff — woke up Thursday to find they were part of a bloodbath of layoffs by McClatchy, our hedge-fund backed owner. Many of our reporters don’t have large savings to sustain them while looking for new positions. Here's how you can help:

🚨CALL TO ACTION🚨 Hi all! After yesterday’s heartbreaking news I’m looking for journalists who might be willing to be a resource for my laid off colleagues. Whether it’s networking, a shoulder to cry on or editing a resume. Those interested please shoot me a DM. Thanks in advance 📰

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by McClatchy’s decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington

Today, McClatchy laid off 13 of my colleagues. Journalists who've given years of their lives to holding the powerful accountable and keeping our community informed every day. Newsrooms shouldn't be run as a hedge fund — they're a public service and should be treated as such.

Using interviews with witnesses, footage from bystanders and other available information, the Idaho Statesman reconstructed a timeline of the mass shooting in Twin Falls, Idaho that killed three people and injured seven others. Here's what we've learned.
