The McClatchy workers in the PNW won an incredible contract after a year of bargaining including some of the best language on Artificial Intelligence in a NewsGuild contract. We are hosting a virtual town hall on August 5th to share lessons and answer your questions. DM for the Registration Link.
Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild

We are the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild, TNG-CWA. For almost 90 years we've been representing journalists across the PNW. Today, we represent more than 350 workers in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho. https://linktr.ee/pnwguild
⚡️⚡️⚡️ Our members at Skagit Valley Herald, Anacortes American, and Stanwood-Camano News started a strike today against Adams MutliMedia. Workers are demanding AI protections and fair pay. newsguild.org/skagit-news-... #NewsNotSlop @pacnwguild.bsky.social

We of the Noisy Union have become aware of some speculation regarding The Stranger's primary election endorsements. We are confident in the integrity of this slate of endorsements, and encourage concerned parties to read the SECB's full reasoning when our endorsements go live on the site tomorrow.

McClatchy’s corporate leaders still haven’t made a case for their AI initiative to the public. Internally, they’ve said ~if reporters don’t comply with this AI scheme, we’ll be ruined.~ Unionized journalists believe the opposite is true: Their AI plan is a death spiral. san.com/cc/this-majo...
Don’t cross the picket line today, Tuesday, May 26! Join us by refusing to click any articles or interacting in any way with our five McClatchy newspapers.
Good morning! We have put McClatchy Media on notice that all five of their pacific northwest newsrooms are on a one-day strike. Supporters can pledge to not cross the picket line at actionnetwork.org/letters/tell...
BIG: Three Hearst newsrooms have filed charges against the company for violating federal law. "Hearst needs to end its unlawful tactics, including regressive bargaining and disciplining members for doing Guild business, and come to the table and negotiate in good faith," @albanyguild.bsky.social
The owner of the Idaho Statesman, News Tribune, Bellingham Herald, Tri-City Herald and The Olympian must come to the table immediately with a reasonable offer.
Yet McClatchy won’t listen and has violated federal labor law by refusing to bring decision-makers to the table or even identify them. Both unions have filed an Unfair Labor Practice with the National Labor Relations Board over this tactic.
We have overwhelmingly voted to go on STRIKE as we fight for a fair contract with McClatchy Media and its five Pacific Northwest newspapers. Our demands are simple: Protections against AI and wages that keep up with inflation.
This work isn’t possible without us. But McClatchy would rather spend millions on AI then invest in the humans who won 53 awards, including for uncovering what happened after a raid on a local race track. Donate to our strike fund for fair wages bit.ly/pnwnewsstrike
McClatchy still refuses to offer journalists livable wages, despite nearly a year of bargaining. We are ready to strike. But we need your help! Please consider donating to our strike fund to help us pay our bills while on strike. Please consider donating to our strike fund bit.ly/pnwnewsstrike

McClatchy Media still refuses to offer journalists livable wages, despite nearly a year of bargaining. Our unions are ready to strike. Our communities deserve newspapers where talented reporters can afford to stay. But we need your help!⬇️
Unionized journalists at the Sacramento Bee stand united against McClatchy’s latest AI “articles” initiative. We have withheld our bylines from these stories because we do not want the public to think this is being done in our name — it’s not. We think it’s disgusting.
McClatchy wants you to invest in a Sacramento Bee subscription, but the company doesn’t want to invest in its reporters. Under management’s latest offer, seven local journalists would still make salaries low enough to qualify them for low-income housing.
NEW: Carpenter Media’s layoffs and rapid buyouts of local newsrooms erased coverage for entire communities and threaten local journalism nationwide. Now, they’re deleting stories the White House doesn’t want you to see. Great reporting @columjournreview.bsky.social www.cjr.org/feature/carp...
Carpenter Media's ominous takeover of local news.
In just a few years, a publisher based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has become the country’s fourth-largest newspaper operator. Some reporters wonder if it isn’t the cruelest.

Newspaper conglomerate McClatchy—the hedge fund-owned publisher that owns local outlets across the country—wants to *aggressively* implement A.I. into its newsrooms, w/proposals that have stunned the union. @nataliekorach.bsky.social has the scoop in @status.news: www.status.news/p/mcclatchy-...
McClatchy’s Machine Mindset
A recent meeting with McClatchy executives left union leaders stunned and deeply alarmed about how the company wishes to implement A.I. in the newsroom, Status has learned.

Reporters can do what AI can’t. But McClatchy Media refuses to agree to ethical guidelines on its AI usage. With your support, we can ensure your local news is done by local reporters like these. #ai #ainews #mcclatchy #pnwnewsguild #idahonews #washingtonnews #saybyetoai #savelocalnews
Six months into negotiations, McClatchy Media is continuing to push back against common sense limits on AI in news. If we don't ensure AI ethics are put in place now, it will soon be too late. If reporters don't fight for transparency for our readers, no one will.
See our press release outlining our demands that McClatchy Media has refused. We need your help getting the word out. Share this post, tell us how you feel about AI in your local news, and follow us for more updates. #ai #ainews #mcclatchy #pnwnewsguild #saybyetoai
After just over a year of bargaining, union employees at The Stranger, the Portland Mercury, EverOut, and Bold Type Tickets have just ratified their first-ever contract! 🥳 🎉 🥳 🎉
🚨BREAKING: STRIKERS WIN! The order affirms what we’ve said all along: The PG’s lawless union-busting cannot stand. We made sure it didn’t. We’re taking back what they stole from us. We won this strike.
Tomorrow, our unfair labor practice strike against @post-gazette.com marks it's third full year. Three years of fighting the most lawless union-busting campaign can be tiring, but we're never going to quit fighting. Last night, we were uplifted to see a new sign adorning the Pittsburgh skyline...
Good morning! We are back in effects bargaining this afternoon with @cascadepbs.bsky.social over the layoffs of our members with the @cascadepbsunion.bsky.social. The public has spoken loudly and we hope management is listening. 🧵
It’s difficult to find the words to express how our unit is feeling right now, but we’ll take a stab at it: shocked, disappointed, angry, gutted. @cascadepbs.bsky.social’s choice to eliminate long-form written reporting is a massive loss for our community in a critical moment. tinyurl.com/LayoffFund
