I deserve kudos for somehow killing the pretentious pedant in me at the other night's film club discussion in which people were talking about which Nosferatu is better, "the old Nosferatu" (Murnau) or "the new Nosferatu," (Eggers) while failing to recognize "the 'Janus Films' Nosferatu" (Herzog).

Realizing that, at some point in the last few months, I actually have heard "Choosin' Texas." It made so little an impression that I didn’t realize it was the same song as the one currently dominating the zeitgeist and/or discourse. It's Halloween. Somebody make a "Choosin' Hexes" parody cover.

The political challenge of my adulthood is that, every 7-8 years, something takes a sledgehammer to one of the pillars of the postwar consensus and roughly doubles the ambient apathy / despair / solipsism of a system that requires true believers to operate.

Howard V. Brown did a lot of great 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine covers. Nevertheless, his June 1924 cover to "Scientific American" might be my favorite work of his, despite not actually being science fiction. I love the nonchalant surrealism.
