I want to talk a little bit about this new Science paper led by star student Caroline Needle, Catherine Walker and myself. The idea goes back to this controversial new idea called the marine ice cliff instability. @whoi.edu @umich.edu

Empirical constraints on ice cliff calving

When calving cliffs at the margins of Earth’s ice sheets exceed a critical height, runaway retreat may be initiated in a process called the marine ice cliff instability. However, sufficiently tall ice...

Last month saw a very large temperature anomaly gradient between the Weddell Sea region and West #Antarctica. In fact, this was one of the very few places anywhere on the globe with colder than average temperatures in August, especially compared to older baselines (e.g., 1951-1980). Data from ERA5.

Polar stereographic map of 2-m air temperature anomalies in the Antarctic for August 2026. Red shading is shown for warmer anomalies, and blue shading is shown for colder anomalies. There is a lot of variability in the pattern of temperature anomalies across the continent. Anomalies are calculated relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

HI HELLO. Mitch McConnell and Tom Kean got longer medical leaves (with literally zero transparency and fully funded healthcare) than I, and most women get after having a baby…including having a baby via major surgery 💁🏻‍♀️

A possibly worthwhile point of clarification: the 'models' discussed here are statistical fits to the last ~100 years of data (from NOAA Atlas 14). This is inevitably backwards looking and will be an underestimate of current probabilities of rainfall intensity in a changing climate.

“There is a more structural question if these big events keep happening,” Berg said. “How far is it a statistical question, then how much is the ground shifting under our feet?” insideclimatenews.org/news/1707202...

Scoop: NSF has been quietly blocking new funds and grants to four top universities: Duke, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. Dozens of proposals from PIs at these universities—and their collaborators—have been stuck at the Office of Award Management awaiting finalization for months.

Study (N=3,500) finds 68% of researchers observed gift authorship (credit w/o contributing); 55% observed ghost authorship (no credit for contributing). Women researchers reported more conflicts over authorship & felt less comfortable raising concerns. theconversation.com/who-gets-cre...
