Allegra Rosenberg @tchotchke.bsky.social explains what Usenet was, and she continues with a meditation on misconceptions that Generation Z have about life in the 90s and 2000s. tchotchke.substack.com/p/zoomers-do...
Zoomers don't know what Usenet is
As proven by their tweets about Gerard Way's late-90s online fetish posting. But does that even matter?

Excited that my article on collecting polar exploration ephemera is live, part of the special issue “Crossings in Polar Art History” for the journal Art History. Thanks to issue editors @issygapp.bsky.social and Mark Cheetham and everyone who spoke to me for this piece, incl. @tchotchke.bsky.social!

This from @tchotchke.bsky.social is so, so good on current fandom issues, especially around fanfic. Feels like as we see this stuff with AI and clout-chasing elsewhere, fandom was never going to be exempt. I’m not at all into Heatex Rivalry, but it’s a bellwether open.substack.com/pub/tchotchk...
Fanfiction has an AI problem
And a social media problem, and a clout problem — but actually, they're all kind of the same problem?

A huge congrats to Kaitlyn on her contributions to the recent ID of the remains of FOUR (!!!!) new Franklin Expedition men, as part of Dr. Douglas Stenton's research team. Full scientific paper in the thread. For access to Kaitlyn's 2025 TC presentation, please email command [@] terror dot camp.
Katie G@katiegors.bsky.social · 5mo agoLast year I was able to assist in identifying 4 (FOUR?!?) members of the Franklin expedition! I'm the amateur genealogist who researched Bridgens, Young, Orren, and Peglar, and was able to find and contact living descendants of their families who agreed to do DNA tests!
i am in @emilygouldnymag.bsky.social newsletter today giving a sneaky preview of my book and chatting all things fanfiction and heated rivalry 😎🤩 nymag.substack.com/p/byron-was-...

thank you allegra! this is very good. the latest round of "what's a slash?" coverage due to HR has been driving me steadily nuts

Very few, if any, of the Heated Rivalry takes out there have this important point in the screenshot below, and I'm so glad its out there.

These are the kinds of things that make @terrorcamp.bsky.social such a joy to be involved with. Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, made a poster or shared art, and helped organize, especially the brilliant @tchotchke.bsky.social! Can't wait to do it again next year
v i t r i o l@vitriol.bsky.social · 10mo agoThings I learned at @terrorcamp.bsky.social this year: -the word “scurbotic” -the American Ornithological Society is my enemy -I would take a bullet for a Norwegian museum curator named Anders whom I’ve never met -you absolutely do not want to know how they figure out the age of a Greenland shark
So happy to be nerding out at @terrorcamp.bsky.social 🤓 A rare and wonderful space where academic inquiry meets fan convention energy. Great to be with people across the world who are brilliantly, obsessively in love with polar exploration like me 😆 #polarexploration #terrorcamp #conference #fandom
"What if there was an event—online, like all events still were at that point—that combined the best elements of an academic conference and a fan convention?" - @tchotchke.bsky.social on the origins of @terrorcamp.bsky.social niche-canada.org/2025/12/01/t... #envhist #polarstudies #popculture
What a pleasure to moderate this conversation. Takeaways: joy, naivety/approaching your work like an amateur, integrity - all sit at the foundation of creative work that lasts in a world designed to make it seem disposable.
