Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
I mean, c'mon. What this data shows is (a) there's a huge number of students using AI and not studying for very long compared to peers; and (b) negligible "benefits" for students who did study for comparable time periods and used AI.
#TheYearInReform Look, it's very simple. Nothing to see here. Move along. Reform UK is a party - sorry - a company built around British Patriotism and being frank with the public, and it is led by straight-talking anti-elite Nigel Farage.

This sounds reasonable but is 100% wrong. Whether you or agree or disagree with a study is completely immaterial. What matters is whether the study was conducted properly and generates valid results. And it's impolitic to say but it's true: you have to have some level of expertise to judge that.
JD Vance: "Science as practiced in its best form is that if you disagree with it, then you ought to criticize it and you ought to argue against it."
Grammarly is now an enemy of education "Universities risk putting students in impossible positions where they’re simultaneously told they can use a tool and that using certain functions of that tool constitutes cheating." Seriously, ban it. It's no friend of education wonkhe.com/wonk-corner/...
Some reasonable adjustments may have just become academic misconduct
Lots of universities across the UK permit the use of Grammarly in reasonable adjustment plans for disabled students, and some permit it in some circumstances for those whose first language isn't Engli...

What happens to science under autocracy? The rise of the National Socialist Party in 1930s Germany provides an (admittedly extreme) example. Prior to the early 1930s, scientists at German institutions won a third of Nobels. 10 years later, that number was 5%, and has never recovered.
Today we're thrilled to publish our latest piece: @abbykirby.bsky.social on her work teaching fic writing to middle schoolers! "It invites students not just to analyze the role of a text, but to partake in its deconstruction and recreation on their own terms." Read or listen to an audio version:

Fic does something that my traditional English classes cannot: it places the power in the hands of the student.

Essentially *all* research and expert assessments show that this does not work. It will not counter Farage, but literally push votes towards Reform. It genuinely is impossible to overstate how profoundly stupid and strategically illiterate this decision is. You cannot out-Reform Reform.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing tougher measures on immigration to stem a record flow of arrivals across the English Channel and stave off the threat posed by Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party after it made sweeping gains in this week’s local elections.

I am reading the new book by the Facebook / Meta whistleblower - Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams. Interesting bit where she says that the big tech bosses all push their products on other people's kids but refuse to let their own kids use them.
