Further scepticism on post-14 vocational education from @daisychristo.bsky.social. I, like her, became a teacher in 2007, but had forgotten the insanity of all kids being put through the European Computer Driving License to boost league table standings. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/the-proble...
The problem with "parity of esteem"
Vocational education at age 14 is not the answer
substack.nomoremarking.com
The best challenge on the UK government's vocational subject at 14 push, and food for thought for us in Scotland too.
I've weighed in on the great vocational education debate. From what we can see of the govt plans, I think they will repeat mistakes of the past. Also, we need to retire the phrase "parity of esteem". It's not helping. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/the-proble...

I haven’t weighed in because there are definitely others with more expertise but I found this very convincing. If there are flaws in what Daisy is saying, i’d love to know what they are.

Spot on- "so if you are advocating for vocational qualifications at 14, I think it is incumbent upon you to explain how you will stop all these problems happening again"

Good piece on the enormous difficulty of delivering vocational/technical education in a way that's actually helpful

Soild piece from @daisychristo.bsky.social who I always seem to like reading. 👏👏 Personally I think she's bang on. DT and other technical GCSEs (we normally did deliver) have really taken a beating. But doesn't feel like that's a priority in the great replacement here. So I've got same concerns....

Really pleased that @daisychristo.bsky.social has written about the govt’s tech ed proposals. It’s predictably excellent and I hope ministers are listening. I suspect they aren’t.

Excellent article that drills into detail about why generic skills - sadly likely to feature in England's new national curriculum in some form - do not exist. Thanks @daisychristo.bsky.social www.aei.org/research-pro...

I think proponents of devolution underesetimate how much people loathe postcode lotteries. How much they hate the idea of someone in another local authority getting something they don't. It's a fundamental British value to hate postcode lotteries... substack.nomoremarking.com/p/jim-callag...
50 years ago, a new Labour prime minister gave a speech proposing greater central control over education. Why did he want this, & what does it tell us about devolution now? substack.nomoremarking.com/p/jim-callag...

For years now, football fans have got frustrated with VAR following the right process but getting the wrong outcome. This week, with the Folarin Balogun decision, we've seen the opposite problem: the right decision with the wrong process. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/folarin-ba...

More VAR controversies at the World Cup. My book has sections on Snickometer (chapter 1) and the problems with using slow-motion replays (chapter 2). On the latter, there is so much research showing slo-mo changes perception of intentionality. amzn.eu/d/06GbjQaz

Nice article here in today's FT which quotes me. Banning AI in assessments will actually lead to it being used more sensibly in the classroom. See here for more chess-related analogies from me. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/three-thin...
