That’s a hard agree from me. I am genuinely astonished at the number of otherwise sensible commentators who still discuss his latest wild actions as if they’re within the parameters of the normal policy making process.
I agree with @joshgans.bsky.social - the METR/Redwood report is a startling read: metr.org/blog/2026-08...
Brief independent investigation of agents’ behavior, reasoning and collaboration in the OpenAI / Hugging Face hacking incident
Two METR staff members and a Redwood Research contractor investigated an incident in which OpenAI agents coordinated a multi-day hack of Hugging Face on a shared unsanctioned message board.

I wonder why backers of the Paramount merger are resorting to shady astroturf operations like "Neighbors for Strong Communities," a fake organization with an address in Washington, DC that's a nondescript black door next to an Italian restaurant texting ppl in California about "Hollywood jobs"? Oh.
California AG Rob Bonta Says David Ellison Is “Desperate” and “Grasping at Straws”
In an expansive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bonta laid out his strategy and took aim at the Paramount chief and emerging legal rival. “He cannot flee accountability.”

This is the kind of BS we have to all call out hard. We are being played by the oligarchs and this is how they do it. Disinformation and fake grassroots movements.
I did wonder which platform would cater to the demand for mean-spirited attacks on economists now that the market leader has been put out of business, but I didn't expect it to be The Economist.

Here's a fun little dive into corporate astroturfing in the USA: There's an "organization" called Neighbors for Strong Communities that lists no board members, staff or funders. The address on their website is a nondescript black door in Washington, DC next to an Italian restaurant. Seems legit!
Last year, I wrote about how awful it is that many states and cities are still using Facebook and X to communicate vital disaster information. We desperately need to fix this.
We Have to Stop Using Facebook and X to Warn People About Disasters
In the early morning hours of July 4th, as the Guadalupe River reached catastrophic heights, city officials in Kerr County, Texas turned to an all-too familiar mechanism for getting the word out to ar...

During an emergency like we’re having in Hawai’i, I’m reminded of how annoying it is that essential accounts like the electricity company and the City and County of Honolulu are only on Twitter and not on Bluesky.
Does anyone else occasionally find their Economist newspaper app suddenly stops working? And you have to delete it, and its data, and download again. Annoying.
There are so many business models and uses for 3p app stores: protocols, curation for kids, curation for niche tastes, a way to distribute news to benefit newspapers, new tech ideas, nonprofit certifications like low carbon footprint, etc!
This aligns with another thing I've been thinking about (but perhaps harder): in the EU, you can now have alternate app stores on your phone. What if we had on-protocol app stores? @trezy.codes covers a lot of the bits below, content moderation handles safety, social graph recommendations. Neat?
“Trump has rejected disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Right now people in blue states are basically paying federal taxes as if they’re colonized territories of red states. www.politico.com/news/2026/03...
Amtrak is really beyond terrible. It’s raining lightly and 75 degrees and they can’t run the trains. It seems Amtrak’s equipment only works on days that are dry, not hot, not cold, and when few people need to ride. Pathetic. And it’s not as if the tickets are a bargain either.
Starmer's government is still on X, the platform that promotes hate and racism.
Asked about rising racism and hatred in the UK, Keir Starmer says "the very sad thing is I am not able to say that in the 10 years since Jo Cox's death that things have got better because sadly they have got worse. That's on all of us to fix." Well yes, and your government has done what exactly?

Great arguments explaining why the court got the wrong answer in the antitrust case against Meta.
Steve Salop, Allan Collard-Wexler, Marty Gaynor, Nancy Rose, Larry White, and I joined an amicus brief supporting reversal in FTC v. Meta. The district court's market-definition analysis departs from basic economics and risks weakening Section 2 enforcement in digital markets.

Tonight we congratulate our friend Stephen Colbert and his writers, staff and crew for eleven years of excellence. Watch Colbert’s finale tonight, and then never watch CBS again.
Actually, Canada can annex all blue states and would be the most powerful country in the world. To join, US states need to agree to strict gun laws and universal healthcare.

The US is an unreliable and deceitful ally now, and is doing its best to help Putin’s dictatorship commit unspeakable war crimes against a European democracy. It is a good thing if the US pulls out of Europe and stops pretending.

OMG! I was born and raised in the south. I literally grew up calling a toilet a "commode". So "Taking a trump" or "I need to go sit on the trump" or exclaiming "Oh, TRUMP!!!" is fine with me. You know . . . trump happens.
A Roman emperor called Commodus was so enamored of himself that he renamed every month of the year and even the city of Rome after himself and had himself declared a god. Today his name is associated only with toilets. History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes historyfacts.com/famous-figur...
