With Hegseth in the news this week, I’ve noticed him using a particular rhetorical tactic: packaging highly ideological messaging to the military & public w/ (superficially) reasonable & substantive policy proposals. Before I explain what he is up to and why it matters, here are three examples:

Tomorrow morning, I’m sending out requests for letters of evaluation for a promotion and tenure review of a department faculty member. Trying to do a two week turnaround 🙄 send thoughts & prayers and positive energy for a good response rate.

In 1974, Cornell lecturer Lin Farley began recognizing a pattern in the experiences women shared in her Women and Work course: women were being pushed out of jobs by men’s sexual behavior. Farley coined the term, “sexual harassment.”

So when does it get announced that the first AI agent (that we know of) started hacking and emptying people’s bank accounts because it needed money to do whatever stupid thing it was told to do. (Or has this already happened🤔)

Headed to Ft Bragg tomorrow with some fellow pediatric colleagues to meet with folks at the hospital, community programs, and some of the commands about how to expand community focused research that improves the lives of military kids. Really looking forward to it.

Once again, I gotta say: you cannot treat anything you’re feeding into an AI as anonymous. There are enormous ethics implications for, e.g. referees who are clearly uploading others’ unpublished papers without consent, let alone health care professionals or law enforcement

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

Why does this matter? The military has a moral & professional duty to prevent in mitigate harm to civilians. And as a practical matter, it ensures the ability of troops to continue their mission over the long term & the will to build & sustain alliances. www.propublica.org/article/trum...
