Hey! You're distracted. Me too. (IN A GOOD WAY.) So don't bother RSVPing for my chat tonight with Dr. Barry Davis about his book THE PREVENTIONEERS. Watch us with these! www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nwL... www.linkedin.com/events/75213... www.instagram.com/emorycshh/ www.facebook.com/emorycshh/po...
Jesus fuck. If a state actor did this, that's an act of war. If non-state, attempted fucking mass murder.
Cyberattack on France’s national blood service (EFS) via its refrigeration contractor Coolworld. Hackers reset freezers keeping blood donor samples at -30°C to a target of 110°C. The thing that stopped it from destructive impact was an on-call technician who noticed the temperatures going up.
It's not too late! To sign up today to watch my conversation Weds at 6pm ET with Dr. Barry R. Davis of @uthealthhouston.bsky.social about his great new book THE PREVENTIONEERS. From @emorycshh.bsky.social and the Georgia Center for the Book. (And me.) RSVP for links: bit.ly/2026-Barry-R...
An LLM response that is factually incorrect has exactly the same validity, in the machine's programming, as one that is factually correct. There is no contextual correction mechanism in an LLM, because an LLM *does not actually understand what words mean*.
I have lost count of how many people (including people both older and younger than me) I’ve talked to about LLMs who did not know they are capable of making stuff up. “hallucinating” is an industry term to get people to skip over it because they don’t know it means “making stuff up.”
It's fun and not at all telling that Haley Stevens has repeatedly attacked Abdul El-Sayed for perceived antisemitism and is more than fine making appearances with Mike Rogers, who has surrounded himself with people who were caught in group chats saying "I love Hitler" and glorifying the Holocaust.
Put this on your calendar for next week! On Weds 4 Nov at 6pm US ET, I'll talk to Dr. Barry Davis about his new book THE PREVENTIONEERS. Part of the Health Storytelling series for @emorycshh.bsky.social . RSVP for livestream links! bit.ly/2026-Barry-R-Davis
NEW — I spoke to Tom, the guy at the South Carolina Trump rally who compared the president's supporters to the Jonestown Massacre. We talked about his loathing for Trump, his love of death metal, and where he learned his impeccable comedic timing. Read our full chat here:

He planned to make good trouble. But he didn't expect to be handed a Fox News mic.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
VC, founder, dumbass
AI is a pernicious contagious fever and as an infectious disease person, I just have to trust that at some point fevers break. (Or the patient dies. Our culture is the patient.) www.theguardian.com/books/2026/o...

TIL that the French for bulldog is "bouledogues," and I consider this permission to just start frenchifying English words when I skid to a halt because I've run out of vocabulary.
🐶Isabelle a transformé sa maison en Ehpad pour bouledogues. Depuis 2017, elle a recueilli une centaine de chiens malades, handicapés et maltraités. Les soins vétérinaires sont assumés par des mécènes privés. #chien #bouledogue #refuge
I wonder what the statistical likelihood of that happening are…
In 10 days! On 4 Nov at 6pm US ET, I'll talk to Dr Barry R. Davis of the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health about his new book THE PREVENTIONEERS: Diseases, Disasters, and the Discoveries That Changed Our World (JHU Press). Sponsored by @emorycshh.bsky.social RSVP here! bit.ly/author-qa-se...
You really, really need to watch this video clip with the sound on. You will be rewarded.
1 month ago, the Orange Order - a misogynistic organisation steeped in religious discrimination - insisted on marching down a particular road in NI from Drumcree where nobody wanted them to. They still haven't been able to..despite trying in the middle of the night. Sound on. 1/3
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.
I know everyone watched The Devil Wears Prada 2 for the return of the characters and the excesses of the costumes, which is an approach I fully support of course. (Also, Tucci.) But what most people don't realize is that in its search for a beneficent media billionaire, it's a goddamn documentary.

The president temporarily waived clean-air rules for industrial facilities that spew cancer-causing gases. Then his appointees worked to gut the regulations altogether.

Watching @franceinfo.fr broadcast from Place de la Bastille, which was supposed to be on the route of today’s manif until the authorities force-relocated the protest overnight. It’s FULL of visible cops. If people still come, will the flics treat it as illegal assembly?
In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web.

If the things that happen in this administration were written into scripts, the writers' room would laugh at the person presenting it and send them back to do something less heavy-handed on the irony.
This is sad. General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic World War II globe was broken when Pete Hegseth’s team dropped it while trying to move it into his office.
