Above ground: gaslight, soot, and the endless churn of the richest city on Earth. Below ground: eight hundred miles of brick sewer, and the toshers who work it; scavengers who wade the tunnels at low tide with a hoe, a sack, and a bullseye lantern, hunting for coin, cutlery, bone, rope, and rag the city has flushed away without noticing. It's illegal, filthy, and occasionally lucrative. It's also, some nights, not entirely sane down there. Older toshers don't talk much about the deep stretches, brickwork that predates any surveyor's map, the tides that come in against the moon, the tunnels that are very slightly the wrong shape if you look at them too long. They call it gas and nerves. They also, without exception, refuse to work certain junctions alone. You are a tosher. Tonight the tide's low and there's a job on. Something is going to follow you back up.
