Protection against Clostridioides difficile disease by a naturally avirulent strain
Dong et al. show that the avirulent C. difficile isolate ST1-75 outcompetes virulent C. difficile strains to protect mice from colitis, likely by depleting amino acids more efficiently. Because ST1-75 has a competitive advantage during coinfection, it has high biotherapeutic potential for preventing and treating recurrent C. difficile infections.
