Played the long game in grad school by getting married over fall break and now have an anniversary that’s always right around fall break! Good job, tiny baby Stephanie.

Quite good: cook, reader, procrastinator. Decent: mom, writer, teacher. Terribly bad: athlete, winker, cat trainer. Reposts are jokes I wish I'd made first. Stephanieinsleyhershinow.com
Just learned my book is already on the production schedule! Look for How Austen Works* in Fall 2027. *Or whatever marketing decides to change it to!

A new startup plans to set AI agents loose in academic publications. Editing or reviewing for a journal could ultimately be about responding to the demand to curate high quality academic content for AI agents to crawl and collect valuable knowledge tokens. www.redpine.ai/insights/pub...
Banner day for people who were denied tenure!
My Carson Day reading is Allen Grossman’s copy of Eros, the Bittersweet. (“Loving, Knowing”)
Really pleased about Carson because it reminds me I still have time to get way weirder.
Lots to love about Jonathan Healy’s history of the English Civil War, but today my favorite is when the women peace protestors were called “the very scum of the suburbs.”
You may know me from such hits as “being mad that the audiobook narrator pronounces ‘Cowper’ wrong.” You’ll love my new single, “being mad the audiobook narrator pronounces ‘Sit Edward Coke’ wrong”!
As a professor, most of what I do is log in to things
Anyone can come visit my CUNY classrooms at any time. I can even work on some affectations so as to be a better David Lodge character.
it's not the main thing we need, but we do need a David Lodge style Changing Places exchange program so that professors realize the way their institution does things is not standard nor inevitable
missing from this argument is the fact that Williams is an extraordinarily rich college with students who are overall very well-prepared for college—essentially none of this is generalizable even to a flagship university, much less any other higher education institution
Opinion | I’m a College Professor. Writing Isn’t as Important as We Think. (Gift Article)
If I do not treat writing as essential for achieving thought, it is not clear why I should force my students to.

Nigella on Bake Off just feels auspicious. When something is just right. Everything falling into place. The rest of the world is shit, yes, but this one thing is correct for once.
This evening I learned about the Pasadena parrots. Which is to say I heard hundreds of screaming birds and thought, Jesus, are those parrots?!?! And looked it up, and yes.
Stephanie, thank you so much for sharing and see you soon xxxxx. If anyone who read this and liked it wants to follow me I'm @duckrabbit.bsky.social though I'm very bad at social media.
It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.
“CUNY graduates half of New York’s nurses and a third of its educators – workers who remain here, pay billions in taxes and are essential to fulfilling the mayor’s affordability agenda.” It’s long past time to tax NYU and Columbia to support NYC publics!
Opinion: New York’s wealthiest universities need to finally pitch in
It’s time to revisit Mamdani’s proposal to have NYU and Columbia help fund CUNY.

that sound you hear is the agonized screaming of thousands of historians; but especially the historians of medicine, epidemic disease (smallpox, influenza, dysentery), the historians of childbirth and childhood, the historians of quack medicine; the historians of vaccination
Republican Minnesota state auditor candidate (and quack doctor) Scott Jensen: "We almost have to go back to, what did medicine look like to the pioneer days in America?"
Mad in advance about Big Love (probably) not being on the NYT top 100 tv shows of the century.

Our 17yo cat will probably be fine, so I’ll just be here marveling that they actually call it an “Elizabethan collar”!
9yo just finished four hours of work on a presentation for tomorrow. A rite of passage. Was he incredibly slow because he was too focused on the aesthetics of the thing? Yes. Do I have any room to criticize him for this? No.
Learned it, like so many things, from I.A. Richards!
Learned the very useful word “velleity” today.

My hair stylist tells me I’m on track for a gray streak, so please be patient with me as I become totally insufferable.
If you are willing to drop $47 million on AI services but unwilling to invest in research support & infrastructure for humanities faculty & students, you show that austerity is a choice. It’s not “too expensive” to give people the resources they need; you just don’t want to. bsky.app/profile/ashe...
According to a meeting I was in, UMass estimates that if the capacity of these tools were maxed out by student, faculty, staff users, the total cost to the university would be $130,000/day, or about $47 million / year.
It *IS* a romp! I so enjoyed reading this and can’t wait for you to get the chance.
It's happening! 'Killjoy Comedy: Willful Women and 1750s Fiction' is coming out with @uvapress.bsky.social in February 2027. @sinsleyh.bsky.social says it is 'a ROMP'. I am *floored* @bsecs.bsky.social @asecsoffice.bsky.social #18thcentury #c18th www.upress.virginia.edu/title/10256/
