Here are the temperature categories for summer (Jun-Aug) in the Contiguous U.S. Above Normal categories are 83.3% of the map area. Near Normal (middle tercile) areas account for 16.4% of the map area. A paltry 0.3% ended up in the Below Normal category.

Non-hydro renewables (primarily wind and solar) are on track to pass gas this year as the second largest source of electricity generation globally. The rapid over the past 10 years is pretty remarkable! Hat tip to Michael Liebreich for the plot idea.

I had Claude put together a program to plot CO statewide daily averages of ACIS GridData with an area mean. The plot using ACIS only goes back to 1951, but the program can also go back to the 1800s using GHCN stations (with limitations in spatial coverage). You can see how warm 2026 (bold black) is.

The latest @ecmwf.int seasonal forecast paints coastal California with >8 inches above normal precipitation from December–February. That would be about 170% of normal for San Francisco (~22 inches). This is just a computer prediction, but El Niño may have an outsized influence this winter. #CAwx

This smoke is thick enough it may mask fire radiative power that drives the smoke source info the model requires for good forecasts, and therefore, this may lead to underestimates of smoke in coming days. We saw this in the models for Sept 2020 in the same region.

18Z HRRR-Smoke model predicts wildfire smoke to cause "Unhealthy" (red) to "Very Unhealthy" (purple) AQI in the major population centers of the Pacific NW and SW BC on Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure brings NE winds. Also a major heat risk for Portland, OR, with temps in the upper 90s .
