I have finally come up with an explanation for non-AI people that hits for people who don't know what AI is: Anthropic and OpenAI believe they are building God. And if they don't, someone else will build God first. The answer to most of your questions is they believe God will provide.

In the same era rapier dueling was taking over Europe, China was using the jian and dao, the kaskara was popular in North Africa, East Africa had the shotel, and so on.
