In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

"The hypothetical trans girl [...] is the perfect tool for the conservative movement. She can't fight back, can't disprove anyone's assumptions, and can't garner sympathy when she's the target of hate. The perfect trans girl is the one who only exists in the imagination of the loudest cis people."

yup. unrestricted internet access is what allowed me to learn who i am, while being stuck in an environment that was extremely hostile to the idea. its also what made me who i am, in a way, and i don’t have a single regret about it either. it’s what saved me from becoming a bigoted idiot, really.

this isn't very popular to say, but for me personally, it was good that i had unrestricted internet access when i was a minor. i was aware of what i was doing and enjoyed it. i don't look back on it and go "well that was a mistake", i look back on it and wish i could do it for the first time again

Two points: 1. Haley Stevens' campaign paid ~$90 for each vote. That's obscene. 2. Campaign spending should ALWAYS be examined through the lens of opportunity cost. How many public school budgets could be funded with that money? How many of a specific medication could be purchased for how many?

Imagine if all that money went to schools in Michigan instead of attempting to sabotage the Democrats. Then again, I guess AIPAC is into bombing schools, not funding them.

The Ken Jennings kerfuffle, IMO, is a symptom of a wider problem- no one will fucking admit to being/doing something wrong anymore. All he needed to say was "omg, I didn't realize paying the NYT contributes to harm to the trans community. I'm sorry, I'll unsubscribe. Know any Wordle alternatives?"

People point at the legal obstacles to Trump having total power and call it an example of a well-designed state, and laying aside that a well-designed state would not have allowed right-wingers to exist at all, all of the places he's getting the most pushback are obstructive to literally everyone.
