Letting your kids out of the car in the queue for passport control at Dover so they can burn off some energy by running up and down the lanes, what an excellent idea.

Aug 2nd 1985 - Delta Air Lines Flight 191 crashed. One of the many factual plane crashes Raymond remembers. This prevents his brother, Charlie Babbitt, from flying back to LA, forcing them to drive cross country instead. 📽️📅 Rain Man (1988)

3 Screenshots from the move "Rain Man" (1988): First, a young man with dark hair in a suit jacket speaks in an airport. The subtitle reads, "We don't have to take American. There's a lot of flights.". Second, the young man walks away as another man in a tan jacket looks up thoughtfully. The subtitle reads, "Now, there's a Delta.". Third, the two men stand together in the airport, and the man in the tan jacket speaks. The subtitle reads, "Delta crashed August 2, 1985. Lockheed L-1011.".

If someone you know is persuaded by Farage's fearmongering over footage of migrants crossing from Morocco to Ceuta, tell them this: Third-country nationals in Ceuta do not have free movement to mainland Spain or the rest of the Schengen area. Spanish officials say over 25K have already returned.

One thing I did learn from my adventures today is that the AA have a special discreet service for members with particularly high end cars. The vans are silver with no AA branding and the patrol person is supposed to wear white gloves, LOL.

AA have now fixed the van so I’ll be continuing with this job tomorrow. By way of a finale I dropped the key into the seat mechanism while hauling my rucksack out of the cab. Key now retrieved, thank God. What a mess this has been.

Have had a phone call with the driving agency. Turns out they’ve got some new people who didn’t realise from any of the messages I’ve sent since 1200 that I had actually broken down. Kill me now.

In this month in 1961, Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, visited England. Cold War or not, his reception in London seems to have been, press reports say, close to what would soon be Beatlemania. Though photos rarely show the worst of it, the press reports detail huge crowds & fearsome crushes.

Bit of a nervous moment earlier when I thought the breakdown van had arrived but it turned out to be a random van driver stopping right behind me on the hard shoulder. Got back into my own vehicle and locked the doors, and he drove off. Might have been nothing, at least I hope so.

Unforeseen noise issue at Lancaster services: this tower is all very well but its underside reflects the din of the motorway all over the surrounding area. I suppose the roads were a lot quieter when it was built.

The iconic hexagonal tower at the M6 services - it’s shaped like a toadstool with a flat underside. I think it used to be a restaurant or something but it’s a bit tatty now.
