Mike Masnick on protocols for publishers
An interview with @masnick.com (of TechDirt), the author of the influential 2019 paper "Protocols, Not Platforms," reflecting on how his ideas apply to publishers in 2026.

I get it. You want to prepare for tomorrow's livestream by listening to all of our previous livestreams but there's never been a convenient way to filter the live recordings from the conversations. UNTIL TODAY atproto.com/off-protocol...
Off Protocol LIVE is back tomorrow. Reply with your questions and your hosts will do their best to get you an answer on the stream.
Look we still plan to add a proper 'tables' block, but *in the meantime*… 👀 the "Embed HTML" block & show us if you do something cool with it!
just threw a lil custom html block up into leaflet, y'all could probably do something wierd with that huh
The greatest of all possible uses for a decentralized internet protocol now comes with a great cause as well. Feels like a real missed opportunity not to go with "Flushes Number Two" though...
Welcome to Flushes 2.0 The Internet's Bathroom. All-gender, always. 🏳️⚧️ Built on @atproto.com, Flushes is a silly app for sharing when you're flushing. You know what's not silly? Bathroom bills. They target & harm trans people. Try Flushes & join our fundraiser for @trevorproject.bsky.social:
Sharp post — please do make an NCAA bracket app, please do NOT make gambling apps.
I wrote up a bunch of thoughts on what I learned from trying different ways to build an atproto sports app
annot.at is now a lot more user friendly! After registering a site and pulling the feed, you can now see which blog posts are published to @standard.site, which ones aren't, and you can republish! Publishing includes OG image, text content, HTML content, and metadata like tags!
Thanks. Yes, that's what I was trying to say, but took too long to get there. Our politics community is strong, and I'd love for us to expand into new communities. Science and sports have already taken off. Birding, gardening, K-pop, we're open to all (except nazis and jerks).
fun new little websocket client published under @atproto/ws-client. works in the browser or server-side. designed for long-lived connections and reconnects. care taken with flow control and backpressure. because, you know... atproto go wsssshh. tangled.org/strings/did:...
Since @bsky.app is The Sports App, I should note that I setup @wnba.sickos.club and @nfl.sickos.club a few years back and they are mostly still working I think so if you want to advertise which teams you're a fan of, you should check them out! Hi @toni.bsky.team!
Good lord I wish some of you could read on this text based social media website.
We heard you like podcasts so here's another excellent listen with the always delightful @ethanmarcotte.com
What does it mean to design for uncertainty? Coiner of the phrase “responsive web design” @ethanmarcotte.com joined Off Protocol with some thoughts. atproto.com/off-protocol...
auth flow redesigns! shipping soon! customizable background images! feedback welcome!
PDS folks! Working on a redesign of the authentication and dashboard screens for the reference PDS, bringing in a proper component library and consistent patterns across the UI. One notable change: customizable light/dark backgrounds on the auth screens. Let us know what you think! #atproto
Long time @buttondown.com fan here, pretty damn thrilled they built a top-notch @standard.site integration right into the platform. (Heap your praise on, @mary.my.id)
Buttondown now has a built-in @standard.site integration that publishes records to your PDS alongside your newsletters.
Hey this is pretty exciting! How can we work with @scripting.com to bring RSS and @standard.site closer together?
I wrote this yesterday about how I want to hook RSS up to standard.site. I'd love to see my posts on their feed reader, and vice versa. scripting.com/2026/08/02.h...

A lovely interview with the newish Bluesky CEO, @toni.bsky.team! I'm optimistic for the future of the platform and for AT Protocol as a whole. I think their support of devs and other projects on the ecosystem is only getting better, which is awesome.

"As a Bluesky user, you own your data and have greater control over the algorithms that serve you content. Also, the platform is extremely publisher friendly and aims to ... be a quality partner to high-quality news sources." Love to hear it, @sf.gazetteer.co sf.gazetteer.co/reflections-...
Love seeing folks like Rachel, who's been an incredible guide to me over the years, engaging with the protocol.
I'm thinking about how non-developers will feel about atproto. For example, will it take people by surprise that data entered into one app can show up somewhere else? More thoughts in this post.
This is 1000% why I'm doing the Cloud Atlas project. The ecosystem is making TOOLS for PEOPLE to DO things with but mostly getting stuck on the tools part in explanations. (Also I think there's enormous value in the connections *between* tools.) www.wrecka.ge/launching-a-...
Launching a Cloud Atlas
The right questions to arrive with—and the right structure for what comes out of the interviews—are not completely obvious. So I’ve been spending some time thinking about clouds.

Plea to #ATproto developers & companies: Pleasepleaseplease make it easier for the rest of us to help boost your apps & tools by creating good, clear documentation geared toward non-techie users? (not just fellow developers or internal team).🤞🏽 See my post on @leaflet.pub.
We’re all pals here, right? You’d tell me if it wasn’t chill and normal to be having dreams of frantically running around an empty parking deck, being chased by every single member of the atproto ecosystem as a protocol-operated action figure. Like that’s normal. Right?
Going to be showing off some cool @atmosphere.money things at @atproto.nyc community day 👀. You should get tickets...
