Very excited to share the pilot article from my forestry project, now out in the Journal of Global History! In it, I try to interrogate the mechanisms of transimperial knowledge transfer through a look at the hiring and (brief) work of an international group of foresters in 1930s Dutch East Indies.

Colleagues will be sorry to hear that historian John Iliffe has this morning passed away in Cambridge at age 87. Iliffe was a maker of the academic field of African history. He took up a post at the University of Dar es Salaam shortly after Tanganyika's independence. 1/

Too many historians still chasing objectivity, after all the critiques and evidence that this produces highly ideological and biased research. AI is the easy cop out, as in other fields it produces a phony objectivity and allows for the researcher to shirk responsibility for their interpretation.

It’s so many things that AI fails on: archival digging, understanding the context and the why and the means by which any given document was created, being able to bring multiple intersectional (ooh, I said it, but it matters) fields of interpretation and understanding into the analysis. Skill issue.

Daders opsporen. En keihard aanpakken.

really cool going from the 2010 World Cup, where Ghana’s little run seemed like a magical anomaly, to a bunch of African teams contending across the bracket and participating in the global pastime of causing fear and misery in England.
