Zoology Lecturer. Behavioural Ecology, primates, sociality, dogs, wildlife, science, conservation, nature.

Need to harness the power of Bluesky, so reposts are appreciated. If anyone here, or anyone you know attends Bangor University (the Welsh one) and needs a room for the upcoming year, get in touch. One of my son's housemates has dropped out at the last minute, so their house is one short.

New PhD opportunities in behavioural ecology at the University of Tasmania and Macquarie University working with Geoff While and Martin Whiting plus multiple international collaborators on lizard sociality and communication. Please spread the word! #phd

Really? Is that it? If this is all that’s come from COBR, it’s pitifully inadequate. As crisis deepens, it beggars belief that there aren’t eg plans to increase resources for the fire service, support for farmers, max workplace temperature, funded community cool spaces & obvs ban on new fossil fuels

Aside from the personal sympathy and anger on behalf of the staff, I also still feel complete bafflement that the government is letting the sector fall apart. Direct job cuts lead to indirect cuts on other staff at universities, in the area, and suppliers.

Many are following this. Those at risk here on Exeter's Cornwall campus include myself and colleagues in Geography, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Renewable Energy, and Environmental Maths, Humanities, and 1/2 the Environment and Sustainability Institute. I really hope this can be resolved.

It is only very large cities that will not be severely affected by university shrinkage or collapse. A loss of students and universities in mid-sized places like York, Coventry, Exeter, Southampton will change the area fundamentally. In many, universities are the second biggest employer, after NHS.

In accordance with ancient tradition, our next Prime Minister is announced to the nation while standing between a furry and a man with a bin on his head.

A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.

I recently rejected a manuscript (as editor) on animal ethics grounds. Just because a study has ethics approval it doesn’t mean it passes BES ethics standards. Glad the BES journals are taking this seriously and developing their animal ethics policies. Check it out if relevant to your research!

Any ECRs interested in joining a journal editorial board? I’m leaving an associate editor position due to upcoming maternity leave and other commitments and am happy to offer suggestions to the journal for a relacement. Broad zoology remit, reasonable workload.
