So we started with a former neo-nazi who currently makes AI slop videos of political rivals for Twitter clicks as a Tory council candidate, to ending it with Kemi Badenoch handpicking him to become the national party's advisor on radicalisation.

It is quite strange how little the actual public inquiry we're having into the UK's Covid response - the one that's publishing in-depth reports every few months - factors into the "you're not even allowed to ask these questions" complaints. We are, in fact, officially asking these questions!

I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:
How to plant a nuclear plant in Iran
The question is: what on earth is Google doing?

One thing that doesn't seem to have really cut through is that if the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation collapses - which in recent years has gone from "very distant possibility" to "uh, guys" - we don't get a Mediterranean climate, we freeze.
*One* undiscussed problem with embracing a Mediterranean lifestyle as advocated by this piece is we don’t have the Mediterranean, we have the North Sea, and the impact of climate change on the currents and weather patterns of the North Sea is…well, it’s not turning it into the Med, is it?

I think people are getting a bit overwrought about the Emily Wilson piece. It's a good, thoughtful piece! It made me think about a film I enjoyed in interesting ways! Her editor should probably have trimmed a couple of lines! Everybody is okay.
The article is a terrific piece of critical writing, well with reading rather than just the thread. I liked the film a lot more, but I think most of the critique here is directionally spot on - any difference is one of degree.
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
This is *insane* and I suspect might get reversed given it's both less than 20 miles away from the new Number 10 North and a very conspicuous symbol of UK science and discovery.
Terrible news. Aside from learning more about the universe, we're not going to get much economic growth by cutting science funding. (If only we had a Prime Minister who was interested in supporting the north, and Manchester in particular, who could stop this.) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We desperately need a study to figure out which stolen artefact we need to return to lift this curse. Unfortunately, any such study would fall under the purview of the culture secretary, so we're in something of a bind here.
"Lisa Nandy will remain as the culture secretary, Downing Street said." OH GOOD GRIEF

A very warm welcome to Downing Street, Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
The misdirection briefing over chancellor is very funny. But fair play to the mysterious people who this morning and at lunchtime curiously backed John Healey for chancellor at odds of up to 130/1, days after the last time any bets been placed on him for the job with Betfair.

Oh, come on BBC, how are you still talking this rubbish?
Also this report only briefly mentions trans issues, the only explicit references are where they summarise the contents of a database they're using. Stuff like this is part of a sustained effort to delegitimise and suppress even the most basic efforts at describing the information landscape.
The Telegraph are unhappy there’s a government report that exposes *exactly* the kind of misinformation they publish as front page headlines on a daily basis! So, of course, they’re desperate to undermine it! 😆 Here’s the report they don’t want you to see… 👉🏻 usher.ed.ac.uk/sites/defaul...
