For #BlackHistoryMonth, we're highlighting the achievements of the Black scientists, mathematicians and engineers who have made their impact on the modern world. Read our thread below.
I’m sorry, but duh?? So silly to have to even refute this. (No shade to the poster, who helpfully broke down the arguments in the thread.)
Leading scholars of cognitive neuroscience and philosophy argue in Nature that AI is not conscious and almost certainly never will be.

I’ve been feeling some despair about #climate lately, and I know I’m not alone. At times like this we need stories that inspire, and the Pacific Islands students #PISFCC who took climate change to the world’s highest court are one of the most inspiring I know. This film tells it brilliantly.
Thank you for making No Kings Day the single largest early vote activation in American history! This is how we will stop Trump’s election sabotage.
"Depuis l’arrivée d’Emmanuel Macron au pouvoir en 2017, la fortune des milliardaires français a doublé. Ce gain de 220 milliards d’€, concentré sur 32 personnes, équivaut au financement de près de 10 000 postes d’enseignants pendant 400 ans." @cecileduflot.bsky.social www.lavie.fr/actualite/so...

Meanwhile the epidemic in the DRC is continuing to grow rapidly. There have been more than 9000 cases, about half of them deaths. And while you will hear way more about a single suspected plague case in most outlets, this outbreak is now by far the largest Ebola Outbreak the DRC has ever seen.
New paper out today shows that ICE and National Guard presence in DC led to a pretty sizable drop in pediatric ER visits among Spanish-speaking and Hispanic patients. If sick kids can't go to the emergency room, immigration justice has to be a public health issue. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Some days when I feel resentful about having spent years explaining that criminalization is the fuel of fascism which is why we have to reject criminalization, I remember that perhaps the time I say it might be the first time someone has considered the idea. So I keep saying it and keep organizing.
First (and heavy handed) police charges. via @LucAuffret
This is NOT crowd control. Firing tear gas into a dense crowd with most exits blocked.
According to the legal action team Collectif d'action judicaire that is assisting detained kids : “Police practices are not adapted to account for their status as minors.”. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibits arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (Art 37).
Arbitrarily detained students report brutality and sexualised threats from police officers, including threats to “fuck” them and being called “sluts”. Accounts describe physical violence including strangulation, intimidation and humiliation in police custody.
Protests have been met with unprecedented police brutality & mass detention: 1,949 on the 1st October, 90% minors. This exceeds daily arrest peaks during May 1968, Yellow Vests & 2005 & 2023. 215 injured kids. 15-year-old lost a hand; another an eye to a and another suffered a fractured jaw.
On me demande les sources.
