AHHHHHHH THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN STAYS TO DIE AT TROY IN THE ILIAD IS TO AVENGE PATROCLUS. IT'S A POEM ABOUT HIS RAGE. THE OPENING LINES ARE PRETTY CLEAR WHY CAN'T A SINGLE DEFENDER OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION READ A SINGLE THING FROM THE WESTERN CANON AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I read Rubio’s speech where he does a Prager U recap of Ancient Greek history, and the funniest part is where he praises Achilles for seeking glory in Troy even though it means his death. Yeah, Marco, the Iliad is great. What’s Achilles up to in the sequel?

It's the job of the media to scrutinize such statements and decide whether there's a story here at all (maybe the story is Anthropic researchers have fallen into a fantasy-land and brought many policymakers with them), not to just platform them. >>

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

YES. I was just thinking about how many useful ideas and real solutions AREN'T being funded - or even THOUGHT UP - because the money and attention is being sucked into tulip bulbs. You've got kids who might have figured out cold fusion spending all their time building AI video apps.

“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.

Worrye not about 'being productive,' for thou art not a product. Thou art a star daunsinge yn a hopeful skye. A signal blinking across centuryes and worldes. Thou art a song performid just once and perfectlye. Ther ys no part of thee that evir koude be wrong.

Oooooh, y'know what I haven't done in a while and seems like a good idea for an October Friday night? Drunk Tarot! Comment for a one-card draw and my decidedly tipsy interpretation.

Doing an online reading of Titus Andronicus tonight. With a drinking game. Usually in this group's drinkthroughs, you finish a drink when a character dies on-stage. That rule has been suspended for this one. 😅

In case you missed it last night: we are seeing reports all over the country of immigration surges and state violence. If you need whistles for your community, we will send you 100-3000 3d printed for free, and we will love doing it. 3dwhistles.com

Among the things I'll be looking for in an agent is someone willing to push extremely hard for contracts with every anti-AI clause we can think of. Because this is abhorrent behavior from these publishers.

NEW: Staff at HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette told @adamm0rgan.bsky.social AI is infiltrating their workplaces, from generating cover art and back cover copy, to publicity materials, to rejection emails, as execs tell junior staff to "champion" the tech. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

it's a bit concerning that instead of responding to obvious political incentives and moderating on some of their worst and most unpopular policies, the Trump administration is getting more and more extreme

#LGBTQWriteAThon Oct 9: Rhiann has no skeletons because while she's done some awful things, she's not ashamed of them, so she doesn't bother hiding them. She's much more private about the things in her past that normal people are open about (family, childhood, etc.).

#PretendPanel Oct 9: It's always been there, so far as I can remember. One of my earliest efforts was Last Unicorn fanfic that I made my mom write out for me and then made my cousins act out with me. I wanted to be a part of fantastical worlds and also make up my own. Nothing's changed! 😅

oh helllllllllll yeah This is the energy we need. Not reconciliation. Yeah, we're a divided country, because the people on the other side of the line are fucking fascists. I'm fine being divided from them. And they need to face some goddamn consequences when they lose power.

#LGBTQWriteAThon Oct 8: eeeeeeee, I get to talk about clothing, YAY! Honestly I don't know that either of them have a *favorite* outfit, but broadly speaking, the clothing in this world is a mesh of Saxon, Viking, and Anatolian (Toviran) or Byzantine (Requini) influences. 🧵 bc yay clothes!

Charme, grace, nuance, kyndenesse, erudition, glamour, wit, learninge, expertyse, inclusivitye, camaraderie, creativitye, gratitude, humilitye -- all the sweetenesses of fellowship that kan not be boughte. These frustrate knaves who wisshe to be loved simplye by cause thei have moneye or power.

Was listening to MSNOW on the way home from agility class, and they were talking about Obama as an example of appealing to voters using competence, character, and being cool, all of which Dems need to demonstrate now to win. And that's... that's just rhetoric!!! Logos, ethos, pathos, right there!!!

Excellent thread, and can confirm from my camp experiences. Every day I got begged, "Is the library open yet? When are you opening the library?" I have so many cute pics of kids crowded on a blanket or picnic table, all reading. They got SO EXCITED when I ordered new books.

As a parent of a Kid Who Reads and a Kid Who Is Starting to Read, I 100% believe that publishing could put even a little more effort into MG and be rewarded for it. Kids *are* reading. I see it among 9yo's schoolmates, I see it among 5yo's. They love the school library. They love being read to.
