Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Biological basis of bipolar disorders and suicide. #epigenetics #aging #bipolardisorder #suicide #metabolicpsychiatry
Individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression are more likely to lose focus during listening but do so in unique ways: those with schizophrenia zone out, those with depression experience a distracted state with split attention, and each is linked to a unique brain signature.
Distinct Attentional Control Profiles during Language Comprehension in Major Mental Health Disorders
The current study combined behavioral and EEG measures to investigate variations in attentional state during comprehension of spoken stories in a clinical sample that included participants with…

There is encouraging but heterogeneous evidence linking epigenetic age acceleration to worse cognitive performance. More research is needed to establish epigenetic aging tools as premature cognitive aging biomarkers.
Epigenetic aging and cognitive performance in general and psychiatric populations: a systematic review and narrative synthesis
Epigenetic aging and age-related cognitive decline both show substantial variability across individuals. While a potential link between the two is increasingly studied in both general and psychiatric…

Attending the 5th Annual Suicide Research Symposium this week (lnkd.in/gpRjbxDw)? Don't miss the presentation by our brilliant PhD student Valeria Arredondo on Wed, April 15th, on the methylomics/transcriptomics of suicide/bipolar disorder (teaser: long non-coding RNAs!!). #suicide #bipolardisorder
Still time to register for the Suicide Research Symposium next week! It's such a good conference and it's free so check it out! Yours truly will be moderating the session on DBT and the session on youth and young adult risk screening! www.suicideresearchsymposium.com #suicideprevention #DBT

New publication alert! 🚨 We analyzed the shared genetic architecture of suicide attempt (SA) and ideation (SI) across 13 traits using large-scale GWAS. We found shared loci implicating neurodevelopmental, immune, and metabolic pathways, with distinct signatures for SA vs SI. doi.org/10.1016/j.eu...
Bipolar is one of the most common mental health diagnoses but still remains hugely misunderstood. For #WorldBipolarDay, we want that to change.
Interesting results with careful assessment of genetic influence and multiple confounding variables on DNA methylation in a clinical trial for psychotherapy. Wonderful work, @kirahoeffler.bsky.social and colleagues!
new #preprint: our epigenetic study on psychotherapy response in OCD is available on medRxiv - includes longitudinal analyses and integration with genetic data. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6...

Nice to see a secondary analysis of our hippocampal DNAm data (GEO: GSE129428). Ohi et al. show that 🧠 hippocampus-derived methylation risk scores are significantly associated with #bipolardisorder in 🩸 blood, pointing to cross-tissue epigenetic signatures: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
"Genomic research on suicidality in Latin America is growing but remains fragmented and underpowered. Increasing representative sampling, implementing ancestry-aware methods, and fostering collaborations are essential to advance research and inform prevention strategies in these populations."
Genomic Studies of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Latin American Populations: A Systematic Review

Why do some individuals with serious mental illness experience earlier age-related decline? 🧬 Our new paper in @npp-journal.bsky.social investigates the role of premature biological aging ⌛ in SMI and what it means for future treatments. Check it out here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Very excited to share our latest 📖 publication from the Latin American Genomics Consortium Suicide Working Group, now in press in @biologicalpsych.bsky.social, where we systematically review genomic 🧬 studies of suicidality in Latin American populations: linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii...

🚨New publication alert! We tested the use of blood bulk or L1CAM (of putative 🧠 origin) extracellular vesicles (EVs) to identify #miRNA signatures in #bipolardisorder. Lots of lessons learned and key insights into the use of EVs for biomarker discovery: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
🚨 New paper alert on telomeres! 🚨 Something different from the group! Thanks to Yuxin, a talented student in the lab, we used long-reads in 75 human trios to study telomeres and their inheritance.
Good news deserves to be celebrated! 🥳 Happy to share that our lab was recently awarded 1) a Pilot grant from @mcgovernpeds.bsky.social and 2) a CaDRE award from UTHealth Psychiatry to develop novel in vitro neuronal models to investigate mechanisms linked to suicide and bipolar disorder 🧠🔬
