historian, author, and tour guide. I talk about Bob Dylan, Chicago stuff, old time true crime, and cemetery stories. There's a canon Star Wars character named after me. He/him. Linktr.ee/adamchicago

For all their flaws, fb and insta have been critical to my business. I stream elsewhere as well, but 99% of the audience is on fb, and they’re my most reliable spots to post events. Need to strategize now. Rearrange the letters in “disaster” and you get “opportunity.” Right?

My fb account was accessed from NY at 4:06am Sun, then from a couple of computers in Vietnam. I got a few texts and emails about suspicious activity, but the accounts were disabled at 4:11. Any idiot could see it was a hacker, but i can’t get ahold of an idiot at Meta, only a really stupid robot.

No update from Facebook; I’m still shut down there and on instagram and WhatsApp. Their help robot keeps asking me to login even after we’ve established that I can’t, as is the whole point. “Super intelligence” my ass.

Realized I’ve had an extremely rare Harry Potter piece in my drawer for 25 years; an early promo counter display calling book 4 “the doomspell tournament.” Can’t see many examples of sales online, just people saying how rare it is. Maybe I’ll sell and donate to trans orgs.

I know how i got hacked; I tried a program to automate advertising my events and books (a tedious process of copy/paste that seems like it should be automatable). It seemed like sketchy ai junk so I quit early. Fool me once, shame on you. But teach a man to fool me, and I’ll be fooled for life.

At least if I can’t get back on fb I won’t have to see those horrible feeds with badly inaccurate slop pics of historic sites and a million old farts leaving loving nostalgic comments.

Facebook has a thing where you take a selfie to verify it’s you after being hacked and disabled, but apparently it takes a while and no guarantee it’ll work. Losing the ability to promote my biz is bad but i can’t even veg out on reels of people opening packs of baseball cards and stuff. My algo!

Fuck surveys. No, I don't want to stay on the line to do a survey after the call. No, I don't want you to text me with a survey. No, I don't want you click on the link to take a survey. Or another email reminding me to take the survey. And I don't want to ask my customers to take one, either.

I just wrote a damned good country song. Next step is to film myself singing it in a flannel shirt with a forest or something behind me and not worry that it’s too reminiscent of “Carmelita,” right?

Confession: I think chatbots can be fun. It’s like talking to Zork (if you typed “jump” it’d reply with something snarky). But I don’t get how people can talk to them for very long and not realize they’re talking to a robot that makes shit up.

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.
