Make a Scene! Scenario Festival
@makeascenemn.bsky.social
North America’s European-style larp festival returns on August 14 - 16, 2026 in Minneapolis. Make a Scene is the only stand-alone festival this side of the Atlantic that premieres brand new larps organized around a bespoke theme. www.makeascenemn.org
Creatives should get paid more, imo. They're the glue that helps us empathize and trust in each other!
FLASH SALE on Make a Scene: Tempo theme shirts! This full color design is exclusive to this year's theme and will only be available for a few weeks before and after our festival mid-August. Link to score this merch is 🧵
I learned about the existence of "Australian Freeform" from a talk at this year's @analoggamestudies.bsky.social conference and I immediately sent off an email to Benjamin to learn more, especially seeing that @garthnix.bsky.social made a surprise appearance in the story.
Before larp arrived, Australians had their own brand of freeform roleplaying www.rascal.news/before-larp-...
I've got a new story up on Rascal. It's one of those stories that is a real gift. It's just so charming and fun. Don't worry about what it is about. Just read it! You will not regret it! www.rascal.news/larping-cthu...

I have uploaded my latest larp, which premiered at @makeascenemn.bsky.social , in fully boxed and playable form on my larp website. Enjoy! larp.pilowsky.me/project/the-...

Let's all meet at Make A Scene. Also y'all should submit games.
Monsterhearts got that treatment for so many years. Very popular, held back only by my lack of business acumen, constantly described as a niche title or an undiscovered gem. I think there's a knee-jerk assumption that girl-coded or queer-coded titles only appeal to a small and bounded audience.
If you want to larp and need an amazing place to try it out, this is your time! I couldn't get everything together to go this year, but YOU CAN. Masks are worn, the orgs are great, and no one is doing it like Minneapolis, frankly.

Shhhh. While everyone else is at GenCon, what are you playing? But keep it quiet. We don't want to interrupt their fun.

I got Covid for the *first time* a few weeks ago and let me tell you, please fucking test before you go to an event. Don't be that asshole. And if you are positive stay the fuck home. Some performers and event folks can't mask. The least we can do is test, the best we can do is mask. ✨
There's always a non-negligible number of folks that go from SDCC to GenCon. I hate to break it to you, but COVID is still a thing, conventions are still super spreaders, and you should still test and wear masks if you care about community at all!
Congratulations! You do our Cities proud.
Abby and Riley are at #GenCon2026 in Indianapolis where we've just (improbably!) been awarded the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming. We are overwhelmed and extremely grateful for receiving this high honor. Thank you to all!! ❤️
Great news: the talks from Jubensha Con are now available online for FREE! Big thanks to our amazing speakers for agreeing to this, and to Joe Strickland at @chronicinsanity.bsky.social for producing the videos. A lot of much bigger and more expensive conferences don't do this – but we just did.

My new larp is meant specifically for festivals, and I'm getting all my documentation together, including my preliminary soundscapes which includes in world sounds, mantras, and cuts of songs that feel afrofuturistic. Here is a 🧵of bangers. First up, Alice Coltrane. youtu.be/TQtEFdyhgdE?...

Over the weekend, I was at Ropecon and one of the things I did was hold a presentation about larp and rpgs in movies and tv, together with @jaakkostenros.bsky.social , based on watching them for 19 years in our film club. Here's a bunch of recs:
There's a new Finnish tv series from YLE called Larppi, which is the Finnish word for larp. Watched it today, and between this, Siamin tytöt and Lunastajat, Finnish movies and tv about larp and rpgs are surprisingly strong and non-awful. areena.yle.fi/1-71830883

More to what I was talking about re: proper attribution. The @ttgda.bsky.social is working to reduce instances where publishers, media outlets, and content creators fail to acknowledge the creatives behind the games. irp.cdn-website.com/2b6905d0/fil...
DO NOT create art for the algorithm. DON'T call your work 'content.' DO travel down the stairs to your 'creativity basement.' DO make sure the straps are on securely around your 'art project.' It's IMPORTANT to laugh ecstatically as you pull the big lever. DO this for yourself, NOT for others.
