French researcher, going to a conference in Houston, was forbidden entry to US; his work and personal electronics were both confiscated. Why? Because a “random search” of his cell phone revealed a negative personal opinion on Trump and the Trump administration. www.lemonde.fr/internationa...

Trump and Musk are going after Columbia for "antisemitism" and Hopkins for "DEI" and Penn for "trans spts". Why those issues? Because this is the start of an authoritarian soft takeover of ALL universities. Those issues are just politically convenient because they draw some support from Dems. 1/
They are coming for every university, if you think you’re safe because it hasn’t been yours yet I don’t know what to tell you. Join AAUP, refuse to comply, organize your colleagues
One of the hardest things about being a progressive in 2025 is not realizing that certain people you love would have been Nazis in the 1940s, but that they would have been one of the German citizens who had to be dragged to the concentration camps before they believed the Nazis had been that bad.
Fascinating that someone as single-mindedly power hungry as Gavin Newsom was incapable of recognizing that he COULD have become an extremely powerful anti-Trump warlord almost instantly if he’d gone hard in that direction. Instead, he irretrievably shot himself in the dick by starting a podcast.
California has the strength and size to hit the MAGA freaks hard, but that becomes a lot harder when its governor is a sniveling collaborationist. I don’t think we have the *time* to just wait for Gavin Newsom to term out at this point.
Should be a clear lesson from reconstruction, imo
A frustrating thing is dems are obsessed with restoring norms and to get things sane again it would be required to, likely, not let any republicans in a position to sabotage any fixing of these government entities. But there is a real risk they will immediately restore “bipartisan balance”.
I am begging blue state governors to have lunch this week with your adjutant general of the National Guard. Cannot stress enough how important this relationship is going to be in the near future.
That is exactly the right take. Advocating for things like Universal Healthcare (aka, everyone getting to benefit from our labor) is critical to regain public trust in our guild.
1. Germany has issued a travel advisory for trans and GNC people who wish to travel to the United States. International Pride organization InterPride has done likewise. Travel may be dangerous with visa restrictions. The latest from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.
Germany, InterPride Issue LGBTQ Travel Advisories About United States
At least one foreign LGBTQ rights group has already pulled out of WorldPride to “safeguard our trans and nonbinary staff” from persecution by the U.S. government.

Universities need to treat the Trump administration's hostage lists as organizing lists. A large majority of the universities on these lists should issue a JOINT public response making clear that they won't give in and why they're right not to. That creates space for the rest of the sector to join.
republicans are treating blue cities and states like we're conquered territory to be plundered and destroyed. looted. it's an intolerable situation and the idea that any democrats are willing to vote for this is outrageous.
Warner, one of the DMV senators, tells me "the hit on the District is just mean-spirited." Said they asked Republicans if slashing DC's budget was "a mistake, and no, basically, it was a pointed 'screw you.'" Mentions that police layoffs and a less functional Metro "affect the whole region"
She doesn't mention cloture specifically. But I think it's clear what Pelosi is saying here. And I think her saying it is a pretty big deal.
Think about that 60-some-year-old South Korean senator who was literally climbing over walls to vote for impeachment as martial law was imposed in the country and then looking at…. Chuck Schumer.
Awesome to see my good friend & amazing scientist Jeff Dangl share with Jonathan Jones and Brian Staskawicz the 2025 Wolf Prize in Agriculture for their pioneering work on plant disease resistance 🧪1/n wolffund.org.il/jeffery-l-da...
When the occasion demands the Machiavellianism of a McConnell but all you have to offer is the ‘make nice’ of a Schumer Like I’ve said before… Disney characters who don’t know they’re trapped in a Tarantino film
Out of genuine historical curiosity, what would happen if someone were to assassinate Chuck Schumer?
This is 24 hours apart. Never forget this. They are liars. Their resistance is fake. They want to be powerless so they can reap the rewards of pretending to resist while risking nothing and attempting nothing. They are the reason the country is where it is and we won't be safe until they're gone.
in the united states of america you can choose between the party that wields power even when they haven’t won it and the party that refuses to wield power even when they have
It is time to get creative in torturing US Senators. They presumably go to restaurants, get on planes, go in and out of cars, and other tasks that leave them publicly available. Every minute of that (yes, even with their families) should be the greatest misery anyone has ever known without violence.
Authoritarians govern through fear, not legislation. The simple fear of what they would do in certain situations can push even the opposition to capitulate. That’s success for them. We lose when we fold due to a hypothetical. We win when we challenge the REALITY that is hurting working people.
i'll eat shit, i genuinely did not think schumer would force members of the caucus to go out on limbs for days and then fuck them, even if i think he makes good arguments for it. incredibly poor leadership, and i don't think he can lead the caucus, especially if we ever get the majority back.
Sen. Adam Schiff on the House-passed funding bill: "One thing is certain, if we pass this continuing resolution for the next half year, we will own what the president does. I am not willing to take ownership of that."
@schumer.senate.gov If you vote for cloture you are a stain on this country’s history that will never go away. You are willingly passing power to a tyrant in waiting, and you are a disgrace to every oath of office any senator has ever sworn. Your legacy will be one of cowardice and contempt.
this is what they may say in a matter of months in order to enact a ban on federal funding from going to anyone who provides gender affirming care — hospitals, doctors, insurers.
Schumer: "For sure, the Republican bill is a terrible option. It is not a clean CR. It is deeply partisan. It doesn't address far too many of this country's needs. But I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option."
The irony is that in an age of jet fighters and guided missiles and tanks, inculcating a culture of abusive violence is actually damaging and counter-productive to mlitary effectiveness, but it persists anyway because these ideas are very difficult to kill once they've permeated everyone's brains.
