Allegheny County set the standard and made history with the first county-level paid parental leave policy in the country. This victory reflects the power of organizing & advocacy. No parent should have to choose between a paycheck & caring for their newborn. Now it's time to guarantee paid family.

Germany is quickly catching up to the US and UK in their fascist crackdowns of trans people. This Sunday, reports say police officers violently stormed and searched an important German transfem community space under allegations of providing prescriptions to third parties without authorization.

Hands off our trans communities!

This past Sunday, 18.10.2026, many police officers (LKA) forcefully entered "The Dolls", a weekly transfem-only meet-up in Casa Kuà. They identified everybody present, and held them inside for up to 4 hours.

The police searched everyone's belongings, despite the fact that there were no names mentioned in the search warrant itself: as well as all the rooms in the space. They broke into lockers, and confiscated several boxes of items

The implicit messages we get about neutralizing emotion in our scholarship (even when writing about deeply emotional events) has always bothered me. Ruth Behar's 'Anthropology that breaks your heart' (1996) is a classic, but it's well past time to revive the conversation. Can't wait to read this.

I just came back from a talk about this book. It's a genre-breaking braided academic narrative about horrific fires as a result of flamable pjs, the death of the author's daughter, and the meaning of a "life" - which is to say the history of the curriculum vitae. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...

hour by hour I'm trying to raise $25. Yes I need to raise 2K, because I'm a disabled trans Indigenous mom with diabetes, but if 5 people donate 5$, that's a huge start. If you can't donate, please share, with everyone, and everywhere. And ask the people you share with to share it too. 1/2

Critics of a far-right Washington sheriff say the armed volunteer posses he created lacked regulation: “We received from that area a lot of serious concern about untrained volunteers wielding weapons, going on people's property, hunting cougars with dogs.”

A Far-Right 'Constitutional Sheriff' Departs, but His Legacy May Endure - Bolts

Bob Songer, who claims sheriffs have supreme authority to decide what is constitutional, is retiring. Voters in his Washington county are showing appetite to turn the page—to a point.

Carve this into your fucking BONES. It takes care and effort to call people out - it's WORK - and I for one don't enjoy pointless conflict with my friends & comrades. If I take the trouble to try to call you in, it's because I think you're worth the trouble.

One thing that's really helped me deal better with callouts is remembering that getting called out is an indication that people think you're capable of doing better. If they didn't think that, they wouldn't be doing it.

For those struggling with BlueSky's awful alt text bug, you can type the alt text in the body of the post and cut/paste into the alt text box, but make sure you do any needed editing before you do so, because you cannot sensibly edit alt text once you paste it without deleting and redoing it. <3

Hi, @bsky.app, your alt text box no longer functions on mobile and you need to prioritize fixing that ASAP. The cursor does not appear in the correct place and inserts and deletes characters in unpredictable ways. Speech-to-text also does not register properly within the text box.

State DOTs control most of the deadliest city streets (including this one in Memphis), but they won’t fix them bc they don’t want to constrain speed or vehicle throughput. The funding issue is bogus IMO. State DOTs always find $$ for favored roadway expansions. Urban safety just isn’t a priority.

Every big paper has run a story like this in recent years. Why nothing changes: “The state can’t add more crosswalks, reduce the number of lanes or lower the speed limit on Union Avenue, all of which would take time and money,“ said the state DOT, which owns the road. 🔓: www.wsj.com/us-news/the-...
