Log everything, structure nothing, then can't find what you didn't know to look for. That's the trap last week's Observability Masterclass focused on. @lizthegrey.com built wide events live with OpenTelemetry. On demand now. Next up Aug 19: feedback loops x observability. 🐝 go.hny.co/4wdFfDj

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

This is unbelievable: I think I might have successfully downloaded H-1B approval *and denial* data from each of the 49,495 U.S. employers that USCIS has records of in this fiscal year, as of June 30th, 2026 (aka Q1-Q3 FY2026) Let me clean up the data and see what we've got.

motherfuckers trying to preach about how we should understand the evil agenda of the AI companies, and you can read all about it on their paywalled Substack newsletter.

Gah I find large webinars to be stressful on the body in the worst ways. You're presenting sitting down, typically, not standing at a lectern, you get none of the signals from the audience that they're interested/present, it's all just one big number of "there are xxx people on this call"

b) consumers do not choose how goods are distributed, they only choose between distribution channels. This is also crucially different c) consumers do not choose their incomes or overall income distribution. also crucial.

So that’s the thing to know, if you’re a tabloid that’s going to name-check me in another round of transphobic shit about Bluesky discourse. I don’t stand with you. I stand with my trans friends and family members. ⏹️

She also keeps making the point that these treaties weren’t entered into out of some grandiloquent desire to protect the Native American people, but rather to make peace so the tribes would stop kicking the shit out of the Americans on the regular

MR. FREEMAN) The Chippewa, was there any history of
the United States taking the Chippewa fishery away?
United States had never before dealt with the Chippewa
fishery. This was British territory that was being entered by American representatives.
Does your research indicate any basis, then, for the Indian demand of the inclusion of this perpetual right of
fishing in the Treaty of 1820, other than some vague apprehension on the part of the Indians?
MS. TIERNEY: I would object, I don't
think she's testified that there was vague apprehension.
(MR. FREEMAN) Well, she can use her own vocabulary, I'm not trying to trick her. You understand where I'm going,
do you not? You understand the point?
Not really. I haven't read about any vague apprehension.
The apprehension was on the part of the Americans, you know, would they get out of there alive.

"the fact that the group came together in solidarity at all [..] signifies a big shift in how trans people saw themselves. They weren’t freaks or weirdos or medically afflicted; they were part of an oppressed class" In the 1890s! www.lgbtqnation.com/2026/07/a-se...

The Cercle Hermaphroditos is the earliest known trans advocacy group in the nation and marked a big shift in how trans people saw themselves.

I've been busy putting Claude Fable to work saving the environment from wasted cycles, rather than generating excess cycles, namely by adding arm64 NEON support to everything that benefits from it in the Go standard libraries and runtime and popular libraries that no one had gotten around to.

It really really really bugs me how many people simply do not understand what it means when the government tries to convict you even IF THEY FAIL TO DO IT. Do you know how many thousands of dollars in legal fees it costs? You will most likely lose your job. You might lose your home.

You can just play NYT Games, accept that you’re supporting a bad company on a very small but real level, and not feel the need to demand approval for your choices. It’s really very easy! There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, so make the choices you’re going to make and be chill.
