I have often been critical of the leadership @aaas.org but they just took action on the new OMB rules that will politicize science, speaking out and notifying members. I hope all take the time to follow their advice, contact Congress, and most important, post a comment www.aaas.org/news/aaas-st...

Dear Mark,

Yesterday, AAAS spoke out against a damaging proposal from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that would jeopardize future scientific discoveries and breakthroughs by bringing politics into the heart of scientific evaluation and priority setting and rejecting the will of Congress and the American people.

The proposed rule forgets what has made America the world’s R&D leader for generations. Among many bad policy choices, the most damaging is that it would prioritize politics over merit by enabling OMB budget analysts to override scientific peer review to decide what science is worth funding. If this rule is implemented, Americans' hopes for future cures, national security, and economic strength will rely on the scientific sensibilities of the Director of OMB, the nation’s chief bureaucrat. We must speak out against this with all of our voices.

The proposed rule is laid out over more than 400 pages. The public comment period is open until July 13 and it will take some time to fully assess the rule’s possible impacts. AAAS is already working to prepare a thoughtful, strong, and strategic official comment to OMB. In addition, we are putting all of our resources to work in public and behind the scenes to push back on this outrageous overreach.

The process for rulemaking gives all of us an opportunity to comment in the regulatory process and speak up in the political process. Here are three valuable actions for you to take:

Let your representatives in Congress know that this proposed rule is bad for everyone – not just scientists. Tell them your concerns about putting political appointees who lack the necessary expertise in charge of science and research funding decisions and the potential impact on our hopes for future cures, national security, and American jobs.

She looked for dyes that would penetrate tuberculous lesions, especially dyes incorporating metal atoms such as copper, gold and mercury. Helplines asked #CLEAPSS for an alternative to CuO/H₂SO₄ neutralisation reaction salt making for students to make salts. Not easy, but using ed/ox metal/acid reactions uses the same skills. This is iron(II) sulfate made from staples. #ITeachchem #RealTimeChem #chatchemistry

0.25 cm³ of 1M copper sulfate is added to the iron staples and 2 cm³ of 1.5M sulfuric acid It is heated for 10 minutes. Can also use steel paper clips. This is the personal spirit burner (ethanol biofuel) hotplate.

Using filter paper in small-scale chem does not work. Filtering the reaction mixture through cotton wool in a Pasteur pipette. Copper particles and bits of iron are separated from the iron(II) sulfate solution..

Heating the filtered solution for 10 minutes on my personal spirit-burner, bio-fuel, hotplate.

Then leave to cool. The crystals form slowly, which might take longer than a lesson, but the results are very beautiful.
