The thing that struck me about the Cornell case and the one in Wired about the girl whose recorded sexual assault went viral through the burnerverse was that both girls said the frat boys they were with were their friends. They thought they were safe with those guys, even when they were drunk.

Anyway, we all graduate mostly fall out of touch, but at some point, we're all in NYC and we meet up. And that's when he tells us he's gay and has a boyfriend. So, if you wanna survive going to a frat party have the guy who invites you be gay but deeply closeted, I guess?

Lastly, just because I think this is fucking funny. A friend asked me like what my experience of frat parties at Cornell was. I wasn't involved in Greek life but I had a guy who was in a lot of my econ classes and would invite me and a friend (also in econ) to his rooms parties.

also (please do not yell at me for calling the finger lakes upstate) that whole stretch is pretty economically depressed. The closest cities to Ithaca are Binghamton and Syracuse and they're also college towns. When I was in Syracuse in undergrad they rerouted the city buses for basketball games.

I should add that my time at Cornell was not great for OTHER reasons not SA but the first time I took the night bus (IDK if they still do this but it was a free bus they ran at night to discourage drunk driving or walking back to campus on dark streets) some dude kept pinching my ass. I was 17

My point is this: if I'm a prosecutor looking at a case that would undermine the reputation of the largest employer in my city, I might not take that case either absent outside pressure. And maybe - wild speculation on my part- that University was pressuring me to bury it.

Yes there's Ithaca College. It is tiny. It has just under 5,000 students making it only moderately bigger than my high school. And again I'm only talking about Ithaca's undergrad population. Not its grad population, because I'm too lazy to figure out how many of those are in other campuses.

Cornell is the largest employer in Ithaca. Ithaca as it currently exists would not exist without Ithaca and the town knows it. Cornell has roughly 16,000 undergrads many of them very very affluent. Ithaca has roughly 32,000 residents.

I'm seeing a lot of takes right now about the Cornell rape case, and I don't love talking about Cornell because it was not the best four years of my life. But I think a lot of people are downplaying the town-gown relationship.
