This is a 1,600 bed facility, so it will instantly become one of ICE's largest facilities. It will also be one of (if not the actual) largest ICE jail/prison in the midwest.
🚨ICE has awarded CoreCivic $536.2 million to operate the Prairie Correction Facility in Appleton, Minnesota as an immigration jail. The period of performance begins August 11.
Even under Trump we can still force through billions of dollars of student debt cancellation All praise to @eddebtjustice.bsky.social for fighting the good fight for over a decade to make this the largest class action in US history The fight is far from over
So many people I encounter, especially in HigherEd, believe the only strategy for this moment is "keep your head down." @debtcollective.bsky.social didn't change priorities in 2024, nor in 2020, nor in 2016. They barreled ahead. There first big win was $800 million. This one is $11 billion.
“Can you understand being alone so long you would go out in the middle of the night and put a bucket into the well so you could feel something down there tug at the other end of the rope?" —Jack Gilbert, "The Abandoned Valley"
"People perceived to be vulnerable are frequently targeted in instances of exploitation, harassment, theft and violence during experiences of homelessness. Studies have documented the pervasive victimization of older adults, women and other marginalized populations in shelter environments."
"She was committed to changing the dehumanizing nature of a homeless-serving system ... [As the] COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, the job fell through, an abusive roommate kicked her out[. It] was a 'perfect storm" that [arguably] brewed over a lifetime of accumulating vulnerabilities."
this violence happens daily. “And it turned out to be a man who pulled a woman out of her sleep while she was experiencing homelessness on the monument & dragged her towards the bushes right by the water.” “She had her license stolen. So she was an injured woman who was experiencing a hard time.”

California’s uninsured rate could nearly double by 2030, with the sharpest losses hitting Black, Asian, and Latino residents in Southern California. A new documentary reveals the human toll behind the numbers, including families navigating Medi-Cal amid immigration raids and looming benefit cuts.

This is urgent. Heat deaths are on the rise and I live in my car. My disabilities mean my body cannot effectively thermoregulate.

how to not be preyed upon by people who hunt vulnerable lonely people
Damn this makes me so fucking sad. People hate to ask for help, it feels fucking awful. Nobody chooses, NOBODY, to be homeless or destitute or unable to fend for themselves. Everyone wants autonomy and agency and control of their own lives. Capitalism is killing us. You are helping being this way.
in 2017 Autostraddle published my essay, “The Mammalian Dive Reflex.” It names one of numerous harms visited on a body in an abuse culture sans frontières. Last spring I dealt with another SA. You don’t pay rent with this kind of writing. But I am proud of it. www.autostraddle.com/the-mammalia...
the facts are: people do not believe survivors. there is a sickly, guilty embarrassment, a sort of, "why are you making a big stink out of nothing?" blame implied. it's the emergence of denial, white supremacist racial capitalist patriarchy, and rape culture. it's why people don't speak out.
in truth, there are as many reasons for being homeless as there are people experiencing it. it's not all mental health, substance use disorders, or whatever the flavor of the month may be. some of us are alone in the world. some of us are survivors of violence. listen to people.
in 2024, i lost my birth mother, older half-brother, younger half-brother, and my youngest maternal aunt forever. so i have been grieving.

If you’re curious about what happened to people who are struggling now, many of us can direct you to a straight line between the austerity measures of the late aughts to now, where we were austerity-ied straight out of the labor force, and into a permanent under class
Look do you think anyone asking for mutual aid that you're telling to get a job would not prefer to have a job rather than submit themselves daily to your abuse for their survival?
every homeless person you see (and some whom you do not clock as homeless but nevertheless are) is walking around with a broken heart and it gets broken again several times a day
