We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Bertha Purnell, a gun violence survivor, mom, advocate, former Alliance Board Member and peaceful warrior. Illinois has lost a unique voice calling out for justice and peace. Her friendship and wisdom cannot be replaced.
When Sen. Hirono asked Hegseth if he would carry out an order to shoot protestors, he dodged the question. In addition to the sexual assault allegations, drinking on the job, and ties to white nationalism, Hegseth doesn’t believe in the first amendment. This is disqualifying.

The victims and survivors of the shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison will carry this trauma for the rest of their lives. Every elected official who voted against gun violence prevention legislation is complicit. Our children deserve action, not empty thoughts and prayers.
Gun violence is a public health crisis. Full stop. AND public health prevention frameworks used on other issues (ex: smoking) may not be applicable given the deep historical, racial, and political roots of firearms in this country. Grateful to @jonathanmetzl.bsky.social for the engaging talk.
