Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

The Alito Court: A rare interview with the influential Supreme Court justice

Justice Samuel Alito discussed his opinion in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the leaked draft and its aftermath, same-sex marriage rights and why he's not retiring yet.

And you know, there is something obscene about using the exploitation and murder of poor Black men, women, and children as a metaphor for a largely white electorate supporting a conman. The comparison borrows the horror of their deaths while discarding the conditions of their lives.

That’s what disgusts me almost beyond reason — the casual assurance that these people died because they were foolish, and that our cleverness would have saved us. Like murdered families are a compliment we pay ourselves for being so smart.

There are serious things to say about authoritarianism, manipulation, and cults of personality, but “lol, drink the Kool-Aid” does none of that work. It makes the victims’ supposed gullibility the memorable part and lets the machinery of their captivity and agonizing death disappear.

At the end, children were poisoned and armed guards surrounded the pavilion. People objected because they wanted to live. They were shot for it. Whatever individual adults believed or chose, calling the whole thing blind devotion erases coercion, and children cannot consent to their own murder.

People were isolated in a remote settlement in Guyana, subjected to surveillance, threats, and intense punishment. Leaving was dangerous. Some escaped, and others desperately sought help getting out. “Why didn’t they just leave?” is remarkably easy to ask from somewhere you’re free to leave.

Peoples Temple drew members through promises of racial equality, material support, and community. Most were poor, many were elderly. 70% of its members (and victims) were Black. Wanting somewhere to live with dignity and joy was the vulnerability Jones exploited.

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

This is huge news, especially for all the "Bluesky isn't really decentralized" folks. Having the PLC Org as wholly independent is a big, important step forward. And great to see that Filippo is part of it...

I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

when you join a community, its posts show up in your Discover feed. you can also turn on activity notifications and get updates from communities you’ve joined. there could also be a special feed or custom feeds that show updates from your communities.

to start, there would be three privacy levels to choose from: - public (anyone can find it, read and post) - invite-only (anyone can find it, but you must be approved to read and post) - private (you need a link to find it, and you must be approved to read and post).

each community gets a handle that doubles as a URL, like community-name.bsky.social or community-name.bsky.space. go to that URL and you land on a custom homepage for the community. builders can also host a completely custom experience there instead.

on Bluesky, you’ll be able to create communities, join them, post in them, and get updates. the core features on Bluesky stay simple. the magic comes from communities also existing on the open web. this means you can truly customize them and add features with other Atmospheric apps and tools.

communities are coming to Bluesky this year. today, Bluesky is one big space. communities will be smaller spaces inside that where you can go deeper and hang out with people who care about the same stuff.

Watch what you post because Threads just might pretend you're the guy who masturbated on the plane. What just happened to Peter Shankman is a warning for all of us using Meta products.

okay i’m very impressed with @typesafeai.bsky.social. it’s a bit late and it’s time to have some beers in mexico but i’m getting some extremely promising results on real world classification tasks that historically would have needed either large models or finetunes on expensive gpus

“Although Black and Hispanic teen girls are disproportionately providing family care compared to white youth, Black boys and young men are also becoming the main caregivers in their families. During COVID-19, Black and brown youth caregivers filled gaps in a broken healthcare system.”

Young Black Men and Boys Are Quietly Taking On a Caregiving Crisis Few People See

5.4 million children and adolescents in the U.S. are caregivers. For Black male youth, the picture is even more complicated.
