Every time I share photos of fireflies in my backyard, I get folks lamenting not seeing fireflies anymore. If this is you, depending on where you live, you can get more fireflies! About 1/3 of our NA species are threatened, but it's pretty easy to help them out especially in these areas. Here's how:

If you don’t have any influence (and even if you do), talk to your community members nicely and yell at your lawmakers about dark sky initiatives, habitat protection, and flipping off yard pesticide treatments! - Fireflies need habitat! When applicable and when able: mow less, leave taller vegetation, plant native plants, leave “messy” areas with leaf litter, sticks, logs. Firefly larvae need moist areas to hunt and live in for up to two years before becoming adults. - Reduce or discontinue outdoor lights at night! Discontinue decorative and accent lighting; use timers, dimmers, or motion activated lights. Turn lights off when you aren’t using them. Fight for dark sky initiatives locally and ways to reduce light pollution. - Don’t use pesticides, eliminate lawn treatments, including grub killing treatments (fireflies spend their first stage of life on/in the ground). Mosquito lawn treatment companies are scams that do more harm than they do mosquito killing. Stop Touching Grass with this nasty stuff. Bluesky is making more bad moderation decisions. Flagging entire accounts will severely censor artists and also makes it even harder to actually use as intended even if you do what to not see nsfw (if entire account even text posts is labeled how do you know what is/isn’t nsfw until viewing?).

Bsky is apparently gonna start flagging whole accounts as nsfw soon so if you don't already know about your moderation settings, highly suggest switching nsfw from Hide to Warn; otherwise many creators will completely vanish from your timeline when they roll this out.

PSA: Bluesky's new auto-tagging moderation stuff is a disaster. Disable it. Go into Settings on the Bluesky site and enable adult content and set everything to Warn at most, which makes posts opt-in. Hide just vanishes posts. Then go into Advanced/Bluesky Mod Service and do the same on everything.

I'll say what Bluesky fails to address in v1.122 They've rolled out a new "adult content" tag applied on an entire account, hiding all their posts from users, including text posts, even if they may be SFW This update, while well-intentioned, defeats the whole purpose of the content filters system

bsky too quiet? missing comments? not seeing posts from spicy artists? check your moderation settings and your bsky filters if you haven't configured these before, many of these will be set to hide as defaults

When I was a kid, I would brush off compliments and demean my art until my art teacher took me aside and told me to never do that shit again. Always take the compliment. If they were insincere, that shits on them. Do not make yourself small for others. It's insane how much of that changed my life.

it really is shocking how much self deprecation is seen as a cultural requirement for 'serious art.' 'real' artists are not allowed to exalt their work and must present it publicly as a sort of 'i dont think this is very good but maybe you will get around to it.' HECK THAT. love yourself

Kickstarter officially banning adult content now. Knew this was coming, but it still sucks to have yet another part of the internet that I've been explicitly evicted from. Digital gentrification is exhausting.

I've been a lot happier as a person and creator since I started asking myself, "Are you scared of it because it bothers YOU, or have you just internalized being told it's problematic?" and then doing it scared. I hope everyone else can also find something so freeing.

Fellow Americans, we need to be calling and writing our reps to tell them to oppose the "Parents Decide Act". It's an act that will demand that all major OS makers integrate a direct forced age verification control into all OS. Trust me, we do NOT want this.
