UCU thinks university rankings are nonsense. But university senior managers love them. They have been boasting about Leicester rising 12 places in the QS rankings. Leicester UCU prepared this infographic to offer a more long-term perspective.
What I *love* about UK Higher Education is that there is a belief in meritocracy which intentionally ignores the class system. Universities have to report on the jobs their students get after finishing their degrees and the salaries they get, as if their degree is divorced from their class ->
End of the financial year approaching. And we URGENTLY need protection against this kind of rushed playing with people's lives for the sake of sprucing up the report to the banks... #UKHE

When Trump is creating a hostile environment for science, we should welcome the brightest minds from around the world with open arms. I want tomorrow’s Nobel Prize winners building the future here in Britain.

And that “only” cost a quarter million in consultancy fees to QS in 2024 (up from £228,000 in 2022) and manipulating staff into badgering their friends to write glowing reviews “to make the department/faculty look compliant for the central uni”. Yay?

👇 And it's notable that a lot of the local Labour and trade unionist movements, which were often comprised of and promoting the interest of predominantly manual workers, were very active in promoting education, culture and reading. So they are betraying their own heritage on multiple levels.
Loukas Christodoulou@loukas.bsky.social · 2mo agoYet another historical irony is how that labour movement of 100 years ago used to constantly refer to "workers, by hand or brain" because the movement was acutely aware that limiting itself to a narrow definition of worker was a loser stance.
