All new communications technologies are sold as good for health, education, inequality and democracy. All new communications technologies then turn out to be perfectly optimized for demagogy and porn.
the dollar system is "a global panopticon and choke point for everyone except criminals"
@dsquareddigest.bsky.social and I have a @britishacademy.bsky.social paper on how the US is now somehow managing to combine gross overuse of dollar power (e.g. upcoming ICC sanctions) with genial complaisance about the use of crypto to circumvent ordinary controls

Some people have actually already been getting their books, but happy UK publication day to me! 🥳 The US book isn’t published until next week, so let’s call this a small win for Europe over America.
Oh good. Prize list season. A brand-new way to feel terrible about myself.

Honestly one of the best reviews of The Almighty Dollar I've gotten so far
It's hardly a new observation, but with foreign private sector capital flows into the US absolutely bodying the official sector, the "reserve currency" conception of the dollar is increasingly inappropriate. It's a "portfolio" or "funding" currency now, and has been for a while:

This was a good book not just because the story is interesting, but Greeley is a good storyteller

Having that great and maddening experience where I dig into a bunch of old documents, absolutely convinced of what I will find, and instead find something completely different and have to understand and then write it all up from scratch. I was very wrong! But I was very wrong in a cool way!
I was one of so many people near the South Tower when it fell. I've been thunking about it this week, as I know a lot of people have. A couple of years ago I finally figured out how to write about how it follows me still. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Bill of exchange flow charts are my love language
A sneak peak at what I'm currently working on. This is a flow chart of a contested bill of exchange from the 1680s – the simplest way of showing a transaction that was incredibly complicated and contentious, ultimately requiring intervention from Versailles 🗃️
