New piece up @thenation.com about why Democrats could really win some senate seats in deep red territory this year.
Yes, the Democrats Have a Real Shot at the Senate This Time
The historic political failures of the GOP have even created openings in reliably red states.

Really enjoying this thing where Chicago has the summer climate of Hanoi.
How does one reach a “deal” with a country we are running parasitically like a subsidiary?

I still can’t believe that “Adults” got dumped on by critics last year. New season just dropped and the first episode had me in literal tears.
Also a massive own-goal to nominate a truly clueless nepo-Boomer that will likely force the GOP to spend money defending a senate seat in a state Trump won by 18 points.
Nearly a generational fumble lmao
Increasingly I am a single issue voter in local politics, which is that everyone drives like a homicidal sociopath and no one even pretends to try to stop it.
Hard to point to a single high-profile senate race where Republicans lead in an average of the last few polls. Yes there’s a lot of trashy or candidate-sponsored surveys but this feels different from 2018 when a lot of Dems in reach states had already started to fade.
As a political scientist i have signed many open letters defending free and fair elections, congressional oversight of the executive branch, and federal funding for science. It’s a wild choice to make this your first one.
This is the first open letter I've signed. I encourage all academics who still care about higher ed's credibility to do it. We're at a crossroads: if we can't uphold academic freedom even for those whose views are despicable, we won't agree on anything else. johnarmstrongmaths.com/openletters/...
It’s a new semester, time to teach some classes I’m only marginally qualified to lead!
It's unconscionable to treat people who were here legally literally yesterday like this. It's not just that it's morally bankrupt to rescind the TPS order. It's fucking shameful to bait and switch other human beings who came here for refuge and have done nothing wrong other than existing.
This is sickening. Even #Ohio's Republican governor says the #Haitians have revitalized Springfield, but #ICE is jailing them, and planning deportations. #Haiti www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/u...

Francesca Hong scrutinized over ‘cancel Thanksgiving’ post in Wisconsin governor race
Hong, a democratic socialist running for Wisconsin governor, is getting attention for social media posts calling for canceling Thanksgiving and abolishing police.

Trump Calls Off Planned Attack on Iran, Citing Diplomatic Progress
The region had been preparing for another escalation after Washington and Tehran made new threats.

New for @thenation.com on why the danger of Trump engaging in a wild and reckless escalation in Iran is quite real.
Trump’s Lethal Ad-Libbing in Iraq Enters Its Most Dangerous Phase
A new round of US bombing will only reinforce the dynamics pointing to an American loss—but that wouldn't prevent the president from adopting still more destructive measures.

Can't get numb to this: The United States is stuck in a war it started, cannot end, and may further escalate to no avail, having dismantled its diplomatic apparatus, depleted its military stockpile, and destroyed its credibility. A historic strategic mistake harming millions in many different ways.
I've got a new piece up @thenation.com about Trump's self-inflicted Iran predicament and how the choices are the same as they were a month ago. In a very real sense we are at war because a single octogenarian narcissist can't admit that he was wrong.
Trump Can’t Admit That He Lost the Iran War
An expensive, ruinous conflict resumes for no other reason than one octogenarian narcissist’s inability to face reality.

I really liked Project Hail Mary but remain puzzled by why a computer that can decipher an entire alien language couldn't be programmed to include definite and indefinite articles in Rocky's speech.
