Who will call for a big fight, and big change? The Old Ways of Congress are gone. A New Congress is needed.

And that so much in political donations have nothing to do with party or candidate, but which person who is important to your business deals asked you to attend or contribute (a huge benefit for GOP as rich and powerful who you want to placate are Repubs)

People don't realize that there's been essentially no in-depth journalistic coverage of Republicans for the past thirty years. And no, the occasional ProPublica scoop once every five years isn't the same. Republicans are terrorists who terrorized the media into submission. It's kind of that simple.

Jeff Zucker, friend of Trump, ran CNN in 2015 and tilted it pro-Trump. Then in 2022 CNN was taken over by David Zaslav, a Republican chosen by board head John C Malone, a GOP activist billionaire. Now CNN is being taken over by the GOP Ellisons. CNN has been a Repub network for more than a decade!

She and McMorrow are both my reps and there are miles of difference between them. As you mentioned above, a lot of people don't realize how thin Steven's resume was before AIPAC backed her over Andy Levin. She's really gotten to exist in a bubble and develop no actual political instincts.

Under discussed on here because most of us don't watch cable television news anymore but CNN has been arguably way worse than FOX News wrt its coverage of Michigan— every single panel is headed by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and has 3 conservatives for every 1 liberal.

The new Ben Rhodes essay does a very good job of describing just how delusional most of these people are on a institutional level. In order to become powerful in this context you are literally obliged to dumb yourself down.

I just can’t get over how someone who was an elected Democrat in Congress not only thought it was a good idea to attack AES now, but said “our close ally Israel” and quoted Greenblatt about antisemitism. This is like a child saying “soda is healthy, look this ad from Coke says so”

I am sanguine about a lot of Jewish opposition to AES and even Mamdani, in that it's basically the inevitable result of understandable communal politics--the same way I viewed Uncommitted and Arab opposition to Biden--but I really, truly hate these fucking professional philosemites.

There are plenty of Michigan Jews who will vote against El-Sayed for bad and racist reasons. But it's still weird that Haley Stevens, who is not Jewish, keeps appointing herself "voice of the Jews" without our consent. Particularly given that she ended the career of an actual Jewish Rep, Andy Levin.

"Ms. Stevens, a staunch supporter of Israel, said on CNN that she is representing Jewish Michiganders who supported her and are angry about advertising that they view as antisemitic. The campaign of Dr. El-Sayed, a vocal critic of Israel, has said it was “not affiliated in any way” with the ad that has come under scrutiny. But Ms. Stevens said that does not go far enough."

if nothing else you can take away from this, it's that the NYT knows exactly how to do "full court press" coverage to create and push a scandal and chooses not to do it to Trump or to Republicans, even when their own reporters uncover ("exclusive!") something damning

I wrote about the New York Times’ multimedia full-court press on the dumb Alaska story — a dozen print, video, audio, and newsletter reports at last count — and the news media’s responsibility to cover things in proportion to their importance. www.findinggravity.net/the-new-york...

At this writing, the New York Times has now run more than a dozen reports on this matter in just three days. The Times is in the kind of full-court press mode it saves for things like Joe Biden stumbling over his words. By my tally, the alleged Peltola maneuver has been a primary subject of six New York Times articles, four New York Times newsletters, a New York Times podcast, a New York Times video, and two letters to the editor the New York Times chose to run. At least nine New York Times journalists have bylines on these pieces. I can only imagine what the Sunday crossword puzzle has in store for us.1
Meanwhile, the New York Times still has not told readers of a new rape allegation against Donald Trump that was made public on Monday in a report the New York Times dishonestly dismissed on grounds that “it largely cites allegations that have already been public.” The word “largely” is doing a awful lot of work in that sentence, given that the report includes a new rape allegation.

”Our close ally, Israel” John Fetterman took the tack Stevens is taking and he has scuttled any chance of winning re-election. Stevens is showing she’s a political fool here

“As for this story, it included a link to the report for people to read. Best, Patrick” LOL. He really believes what he said to Mark Jacob. A link buried in one Trump story is enough to excuse an avalanche of coverage of (much smaller) D probs. He believes in level, not proportional, coverage.

New — Editor Patrick Healy explains to me NYT’s omission of the new rape details shared by Beatrice Keul in their story about the new House Judiciary Dems report released this week:

There have been many bad NSAs, but Sullivan was part of some of the worst policy and national security calls of recent years. Biden was the man ultimately responsible, but Blinken and Sullivan were instrumental in the US arming ethnic cleansing and genocide, with almost no questions asked.

Oh my god it's this bad faith shit that drives me up a wall. You know exactly why people are pissed off and it has nothing to do with the NYT doing journalism. It's about them NOT doing journalism or only doing it when they feel like it depending on who's in office.

Clara Jeffery@clarajeffery.bsky.social · 2d ago

People who think the Times shouldn’t report on who is behind a Potemkin candidate should really ask themselves if they’d feel that way if such a move might hurt a candidate they favored. This is not a “hit piece” or an “October surprise,” it is journalism.

So many Obama era staffers have sold out to Big Tech and Wall Street. For ex: Jake Sullivan worked at Macro Advisory Partners, a risk advisory corp which “advised a number of companies incl Uber, Mastercard, Lego, and large investment groups such as Bank of America, Aviva, and Std Chartered…”

Whatever happens next Tuesday or in November of 2028 - if Democrats go back to politics as usual during the Obama era - we are going to even more f**ked next time. This - from prominent Obama Dems - is certainly not the way.

Kalshi has hired one of former President Barack Obama’s top advisers, Semafor’s Eleanor Mueller scoops, the latest sign of companies anticipating Democratic victories in next week’s midterms. Political strategist Eric Schultz signed a short-term contract to serve as an out-of-house adviser to Kalshi, a person familiar with the matter said. His hiring comes as Kalshi users forecast a 91% chance that Democrats win a majority in the House and a 65% chance of a Democratic Senate majority. Schultz, who previously served as Obama’s deputy White House press secretary, is one of several Democrats the firm has brought on this year. It has also tapped another Obama aide, Stephanie Cutter, as well as former Biden administration official John Bivona. Businesses in adjacent industries are similarly stockpiling Democratic lobbyists — and occasionally phasing out Republican hands — in preparation for 2027."

Yes. And ppl like Turkish are defending a fantasy notion of Israel in their heads, one where it is a stable liberal democracy that they can visit and pretend is the US. In fact the real country is run by fascists and young Israelis (who Americans like Turkish identify w!) are leaving in droves

Mikhail Gorbachev @mikhailgorbaechev.bsky.... • 21h Certainly it's putting *a* county over party, but that
country isn't the United States

“Turkish has gotten more involved in politics in the last five or six years. He has worked mostly with Michigan Democrats, but he has also donated to Republicans, including GOP Sen. Susan Collins, donating over $24,000 to her allied committees last year” He‘s not a Democrat, it’s that simple

Jason Turkish, a Democratic mega donor, described his decision to back Republican Mike Rogers over Abdul El-Sayed as "putting country before party."

We are at the beginning of the end of bad 'basket-of-polls' politics, where politicians don't do anything without a poll. See this exchange. The public is now seeing what's really driving this so-called popularism approach: people who want to stop change and protect the status quo.

Finally, we are seeing focus on the bad arguments people like Yglesias are using to reinforce the status quo that wealthy donors like. @mehdirhasan.bsky.social asked good questions and Yglesias answered directly.
