“Descriptive” is a property of the research question, not the perceived quality of the results. I often see people state a study limitation and then say “therefore the results are descriptive”. You can’t do an analysis first and then use the results to define what type of study you wanted.

Just got the following "advice" from the panel regarding my rejected funding application for a causal inference study in observational data 🙂🔫 - present results as correlational rather than causal - avoid causal language - recognise confounding and selection ...and more. It's the full bingo card!

Are LLMs ever compatible with slow science? Even if they aren’t used to necessarily “produce more”, don’t they remove the friction that would normally make us stop, think, and slowly figure things out? And isn’t slow science mostly about taking the time to think?

Short story about statistical modeling without causal inference gone badly wrong. Just head on the news that preschoolers play 15 minutes less on rainy days. The reporting stressed that the research was "associational" and therefore couldn't tell us why. Huh? 1/
