Backyard #Astrophotography We've had several days of clear skies during the dark of the moon with more predicted this week, so I have been taking quite a few pictures. Here is Sh2-142 in Cepheus, also called the Wizard Nebula. Why? I have no idea. Open star cluster NGC738 is embedded in it.

An amorphous blue reflection nebula and red emission nebula with an embedded star cluster.

Backyard #Astrophotography As we head into fall, the early night sky turns from the summer Milky Way's nebulae and star clusters to looking out of the disc of our galaxy and seeing other galaxies. What better harbinger than M31, the great galaxy in Andromeda located 2.5 million ly from us.

Large spiral galaxy.

Porcine [POR-syne] (adj.) - Of or relating to swine; resembling or having the characteristics of a pig. Used in a sentence: “Decades of gluttony and self-satisfaction have given him a porcine aspect that even the presidential portraitist was either unable or unwilling to disguise.”

A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme for “Porcine” [POR-syne], defined as “Of or relating to swine; resembling or having the characteristics of a pig.” At right is a black-and-white antique illustration of a large, bristly pig resting on the ground. Beneath the definition, an example sentence reads: “Decades of gluttony and self-satisfaction have given him a porcine aspect that even the presidential portraitist was either unable or unwilling to disguise.”

I spent 4 years staring at that ring, trying to figure it out for my PhD. We learned a lot about its condition (temperature, density, distribution of gas) but not how it formed... which is still something of a mystery. Maybe these infrared observations will help there.

Rod Serling was a king. WWII paratrooper in “The Death Squad,” TV pioneer, LOUD critic of McCarthyism who knew his status as a war hero put him in a privileged position to call shit out. Wrote critiques of racism into his scripts, created The Twilight Zone to escape the censorship that brought on.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE debuted OTD in 1959. One of my absolute favorite shows ever. Been blessed to not only have provided several covers to the comics series over the years but to also co-write w @francazilla.bsky.social & draw our own episode, “SILENT WARNING” currently in stores by @idwpublishing.com

Backyard #Astrophotography The Cocoon Nebula, Caldwell 19, is one of those stellar nurseries whose large, young, bright stars make the surrounding gases glow red. You can just barely make out the surrounding dark dust nebulae that swaddle the newborn stars.

An ovoid mottled red nebula surround by a dark nebula.
