Backyard #Astrophotography Early astronomers called them planetary nebula because they were small, roundish and looked like planets. Here are the best three examples, all photographed on the same night a few days ago. Their names are self evident: the Ring, Dumbbell and Helix nebulae.

The Ring Nebula (M57); a small red ring with a bluish interior.
20 minute exposure with a 50mm f5 250mm focal length quadruplet refractor using a Sony IMX676 (CMOS; Starvis 2) 12.5 megapixel sensor and a dual band filterThe Dumbbell Nebula (M27); a round red and blue nebula. The red portion looks like an apple core.

Petrichor [PET-rih-kor] (n.) - The pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. Use: "The petrichor of a sudden summer shower, mingled with the golden light of the setting sun, transported me straight back to my boyhood on an Iowa farm.”

A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme featuring “Petrichor,” defined as the pleasant smell accompanying the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. On the right, a black-and-white illustration depicts two figures caught in a heavy rainstorm, shielding their faces beneath their hats. On the left, ornate typography presents the word, its pronunciation, definition, and an example sentence recalling a summer shower and childhood on an Iowa farm.

Do we know which services will be live streaming the execution? I would like to begin my boycott of them and their advertisers now. The man to be executed is paralyzed. Will he be seated in his wheelchair for this or tied upright to a post? Do we still condemn cruel and unusual punishments?

Backyard #Astrophotography One of my favorite galaxies is M33 in Triangulum. Its wispy structure is like a beautiful starry lace doily. Under very dark skies, it is barely visible to the naked eye. So when someone asks how far you can see, answer "2.878 million light-years."

A large, spiral galaxy.

The grammatical 'colon' and the anatomical 'colon' are not etymologically related. The anatomical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kolon’ which means “large intestine.” The grammatical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kōlon’ which means “limb.” Both are a means to an end.

Acnestis [ak-NEES-tis] (n.) - The part of the back that cannot easily be reached to scratch. Used in a sentence: “Ever since our illicit dalliance in the back garden, my acnestis has been afflicted with a most infernal rash of Poison Oak, and Miss Drollup has ceased returning my correspondence.”

A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme for “Acnestis,” defined as the part of the back between the shoulder blades that cannot easily be reached to scratch. The example sentence jokes about an illicit garden dalliance, a poison oak rash, and Miss Drollup ceasing correspondence. At right, an antique illustration shows two draped figures with dotted reference lines marking areas of the back.
