I teach philosophy, mostly ancient Greek philosophy, at Washington University in St. Louis. I’m here for the zeitgeist.
It's funny that Jeanine Pirro brought a box of evidence to WH to persuade Trump. He wants her to consciously *throw out* exculpatory facts and *knowingly* prosecute innocent people. So facts can't persuade him by definition. Me and @barbmcquade.bsky.social on this: newrepublic.com/article/2139...

Agreed. And this looks to me like a problem with professions and guilds generally. The cops don’t police their own. MDs are bad at delicensing MDs. The Bar Association is slow to kick bad lawyers out.
One thing we do badly in universities is tolerate and cover for people who can’t or won’t do their jobs. Often for years. And yes, not all disciplines and departments. (One regret I have is not sacking someone I could and should have.)
The pick-me energy of my uni’s chancellor is a real problem, especially because he wants to picked by people who do not have the uni’s interests at heart.

The way student discomfort became valid the second it became right-coded, you have to laugh

I have tied myself to the mast, and I will not be reading anything Alex Rails has written.

Ah, yes, wisdom always honors the money train, and to do so, even refuses to speak the truth. That’s in all the old wisdom books.
I'm sorry but your piece smacks of ingratitude. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer your translation has sold ONE MILLION copies, most I contend, due to the pr run-up and release of the Nolan film. You are entitled to your opinion but why bite the hand that fed you? Maybe silence would be wiser?
Bernie Moreno was a car salesman with a record of wage theft and employment discrimination. Anthony Fauci was the director of NIAID from 1984 to 2022 and in 2008 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work fighting HIV/AIDS in that role.
Moreno to Fauci: "Who the fuck did you think you were?"
My mom just gave this ticket stub that my dad used to see Game 1 of the 1968 World Series with his dad, a huge baseball I never got to meet. Bob Gibson started for the Cardinals, and he struck out 17 Tigers in a complete game shutout.

Elon Musk, owner of X, has called the editor of the Economist "a traitor to the West, plain and simple" after her recent interview with him. He now argues that "anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor" Musk has been socialising violence since Aug25: "fight or die, that's what it comes down to"
“Compared to what?” is always the essential question when asking about critiques of higher education & universities, whether we’re discussing declining trust, freedom of speech, viewpoint diversity, or any of the other things.
This is crucial and often unmentioned. Almost every single diagnosis of declining faith in universities fails to mention that it is runs in parallel to declining faith in almost all American institutions. Any failure to recognize this means it is really flawed or not a serious effort.
Only VERY recently did I realize that my parents might have lied to me for years when they said that our church had a Summer Break just like school did.
My kid is obsessed with the Frozen musical (& yes, I’m taking her to the 2pm outdoor performance in a heat wave tomorrow) but does not know that there is a movie, bc we like it that way. She recently said to me conspiratorially, “Did you know that [grandma] thinks Frozen is a MOVIE?” And laughed.
1 point I emphasize in my classes is that the ancient city of Rome for centuries had 6 aqueducts. Only 4 were necessary to supply enough drinking water for the ~1 mill pop. In rotation, 1 would be under repair & 1 was extra (used for other water purposes) in case of breakage. Redundancy saves lives!
When the Roman Empire "fell", one of the big parts that was an actual problems was the end of aqueduct maintenance. Clean water is life.

Is LeBron James the most important product of Akron since synthetic rubber? I mean, he’s not gonna win us a global war, but the man can ball.
I’m seeing people complain that Nolan makes the Odyssey about Odysseus’ trauma, as they think that Homer makes it about his hubris. But Homer also focuses on Odysseus’ suffering. The poem is long and complex enough to be about multiple things!
I still haven’t stopped cringing from when someone clocked my mirroring or projecting and I panicked that I was coming across as condescending to them for doing this.
People are making fun of AOC for having a slight southern accent while speaking in Memphis but they clearly don’t know the pain of habitually and unconsciously imitating the speaking style of the people around you
