One of my favourite things in urban fantasy lit is when an author likes the IDEA of wizard boarding school drama, but wants to avoid getting Harry Potter stink on them and tries to do that by just inverting all the stuff they regard as problematic, and in so doing independently reinvents the X-Men.
Melfina Outlaw Star truly has that shit on like nobody else. The stockings and pumps/big poncho cape combo with the starched collar and tie? Futuristic yet classic in silhouette. Classy and businesslike without being stuffy. Sultry but not overly sexual. Reminds people of Big Zam. Perfection.
