If this is what happens to a scientific field as a whole when LLMs dominate the workflows of researchers, I can only imagine that the outlook is even worse for any individual researcher who is soldiering on without using them. 😞

Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.
The penny drops. Climate change will break our economies. Fragment our societies. Undermine our governance. And erode our security. "Ecosystem services" are our life support processes. Destroying them destroys the foundations of human civilisation.

This is very cool! "Individual vs. collective action" is often framed as a dichotomy, as if we all have a little bucket full of "climate fucks to give" and a fuck given about your gas furnace or business flights is a fuck not given about pressuring politicians to do climate policy. We can do both!

Anyone who believes it’s possible for science to be apolitical doesn’t understand the practice of science. And this is why scientists really need more education in the philosophy of science and how sociocultural context shapes its practice.
John Timmer@jtimmer.bsky.social · 3w agoIt's been sitting in my "to read" tabs for a while but I've finally gotten around to reading this. I've got two thoughts on it, which I'll elaborate below. One is it's just sloppy. And two it suffers from a common problem: it assumes scientists are the only ones with agency.
I'm far past feeling the need to defend people who celebrate the deaths of ghouls. We live under overt fascism. The regime hunts people in the streets. We are talking about political actors so foul that no moral reconciliation is possible. They can only be defeated. Mourning them is a betrayal.
lindsey graham has been instrumental in killing millions of arabs over more than 30 years and the only way you can say anything about him that would be too charitable to say about hitler or rommel is because you feel a certain way about arabs.
The thing I hate the most about AI is that every interesting assessment method or new attempt at inclusive grading is dead. Grading can only be exams from here on out and students will be much worse off because of it. It's really sad
Britt Lundgren@brittlundgren.bsky.social · 4w agoIt is also upending nearly all of the inclusive pedagogical strategies education research has led us to in recent decades. Instead of just throwing our hands up, the education sector should be initiating a class action lawsuit.
The year is 2316, summer is now one long heatwave, people spontaneously combust upon leaving climate controlled underground bunkers. Now a ritual whose purpose is lost to time, the mounting death tolls are announced with accompanying imagery of people frolicking in the sea during the 'cold era'.
