Green economy champion. Into industrial strategy, trade, innovation and environment policy. Bit of my heart always in Germany, Derbyshire, Scotland, Canada, East of England, Trinidad, Jamaica and on a rugby pitch. Now in London.

Agree. Much as most people already know about climate change and want action, they are vulnerable to arguments about trade offs, and they start to fall away when compared to the myriad and irreversibles costs of not acting. There are cost to action, it won't be easy, but the benefits are enormous.

It’s not that people haven’t been told about climate change. It’s that we’ve barely started explaining what happens when the systems we depend on start failing together. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Trade bodies lobbying against regulation to green their industry is a feature not a flaw. SMMT end up representing the industry of the past at inflection points like this, but it's still not easy for govt to ignore their calls to slow down...so they should design policy that exposes the laggards...

Electric cars just had their best month ever in the UK Nearly 100,000 new BEVs sold, +36% year-on-year (Data from SMMT, which continues to lobby for weaker EV targets)

🧵 As front-page headlines go, this has to be one of the most misleading I've seen in a long time It's an out-and-out lie But notice the trick they use to get away with it...👀 *They're* not lying - they're just quoting someone else who is👍🏻 In this case, the leader of the opposition🙄 1/33

I am fascinated to see what agreement the EU and Canada (and maybe now Australia) come to on food and farming standards. After years of dispute does the safe haven EU provides mean those countries wanting to get closer see the benefit of aligning?

The Japan Times@japantimes.co.jp · 4w ago

Australia's trade minister says the country is aligned with Canada's attempt to seek deeper ties with the European Union, amid Ottowa's escalating trade war with Washington.

Comparing organic and conventional farming is redundant. We know producing same food with zero chemical pesticide or fertilizers or hormones would need more land and worsen the environment impact! Useful comparison would be regen farming of plant rich diet with conventional farming of current diet.

Our World in Data@ourworldindata.org · 4w ago

📝 New article on Our World in Data: Is organic farming better for the environment than conventional farming? One of the most common questions we’re asked about food systems is whether organic farming is better for the environment than conventional methods.

It's that time again, National Trust members. Please use the QuickVote or make your own choices but avoid Bonigala, Cristea, Goldman, Mealing and Omrani. Hopefully one day "Restore Trust" will give up trying to Restore Empire and deny our full and honest history as a nation.

Vote Bonigala, Cristea, Goldman, Mealing and Omrani. Leave the Quick Vote unticked.

Oh blimey, here we go again. Time to vote in the National Trust AGM to keep so-called 'Restore Trust' off the council. Use the quick vote to ensure we don't split the anti-Restore vote. Or.... 1/2 www.nationaltrust.org.uk/who-we-are/a...

Idk but the hype around AI makes it look, walk and quack like a bubble. The AI models that we need are the cheapest and most energy and water efficient ones, rather than ones that rely on a fantasy of abundance. So happy to read this and hope it is another thing that helps burst this bubble early

Those data centre investments are looking increasingly dodgy. "This already means that one can replace data centres and their expensive cutting-edge semiconductor infrastructure in four out of five use cases."

All the focus on displacing the bit of gas we import that is more carbon intensive than the UKs, that is the 20% of what we use, rather on driving down demand so we don't need to use it at all, is angel on the head of a pin stuff. More production is not a solution it is just a distraction.

Kevin Anderson@kevinclimate.bsky.social · last mo.

I was asked by a colleague from my oil & gas days (who has remained in the industry) why UK producing its own gas is less acceptable to the Greens (& others) than importing it from America and West Africa.' The full question & my reply is now online at: climateuncensored.com/there-is-no-...

Great summary of Labour's electoral calculation. I'd add - 'jobs vs climate action' is really 'jobs that won't be around for long vs jobs that will' and salience is a bad metric for a 25 year transition, what matters is support for climate action and knowing that it helps economy, health, security.

Will this summer’s record temperatures and wildfires in Europe make any difference to climate policy? In a piece for @insidestory.bsky.social I look at new polling evidence. Support for climate policy is increasing, but so are left-right divisions on it. insidestory.org.au/europe-takes...

To take this further and make it less fun...as some coastal areas get more flood and winter storm surge, this could take up homes that need to be re-zoned summer use only. But it would still mean less housing overall and summer residences idea might fall apart if AMOC collapse makes UK like Iceland!

The teeny-tiny germ of insight in Richard Tice's argument that we should just enjoy the heat is that we ought to demolish and build enough on our coasts that everyone who lives in a British city can afford to decamp to their holiday apartment in August.
