Just a Philly girl, livin' in a lonely world…and a Luddite learning (now) to BlueSky. #LongCovid since March 2020

Just listened to this full interview & it’s fantastic. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social doesn’t mince words, reminding us the #GreatestMEdicalScandal of the century is not just about neglect, it’s abuse by the medical system & complicity from all of society. Full interview (9 mins): youtu.be/H2rRf_f2hJs

Symptoms are “horrible” and severe cases are a “living nightmare.” @georgemonbiot.bsky.social speaks to @natashadevon.bsky.social on LBC about ME/CFS, its long history of being dismissed and psychologised, and the role of governments and insurers.

I was diagnosed with CFS, renamed ME, wait for it… in 1983, after a very severe non-mononucleosis EBV infection, that fully incapacitated me. The EBV laid dormant, but reared its ugly head during my infection w Lyme/Babesia complicating a full recovery. TY for this story @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I've emailed this brilliant article to the board of directors & the council of governors at & my local 🏥 Chelsea & Westminster. They offer great care in other areas of medicine but where #ME is concerned they fail abysmally & they have a responsibility to change that. #pwME

“Many said they are still being treated as if they have a psychological illness, and still being pushed into GET and CBT.” 😡

I’m only seeing people with ME or Long Covid sharing this. If you’re not affected, can you please read it & share? Ableist propaganda goes viral all the time, which encourages outlets to publish more of it. Can we please make the truth go viral instead?

If folks need an impression of how dismal things are wrt treatment of ME and LC in the NHS, you just need to look at the services stocktake that was done in January 2025. There was "no data" for ME/CFS clinic referrals.

Annex 1 - Data Dashboard - Long Covid ME/CFS Stock take December 2024.

Highlighted box shows that there is NO DATA for total referrals to ME/CFS clinics for the period examined in the stocktake.

The ME Association have managed to acquire (via FOIA request) the report of the NHS stocktake of ME/CFS and Long Covid services that was completed at the end of January 2025. As expected, it is utterly inadequate. meassociation.org.uk/2025/05/nhs-...

The entire thing exists solely to paint marginalized people and those who mask as hysterical weirdos. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for a national publication to be covering a teeny tiny local community scuffle.

Hey so uhhhhh that Boston Globe story about the lesbian bar relaxing its covid rules is an *absolute fucking hit piece* targeting the disabled, chronically ill, and covid-conscious and it would be great if folks sharing and joking about it could recognize that framing.

Brings up why NINDS is the lead here. Neurological disorders are the leading cause of chronic disease, with 1/3 people having a disease considered neuro (1/3 of chronic illnesses? maybe that's what she meant.) Talks about clinical translational efforts that might not have 'commercial appeal' at NIH

Thanks so much everyone for a massive response. I've now had as many emails as I can cope with, so no more please - thank you. They paint a really grim and heatbreaking picture. The neglect and abuse of patients goes on and on. I hope to try to do the issue justice. #ME/CFS

Intending to write another column about the treatment of #ME/CFS patients this week, pegged to new research findings on the biological basis. My question for sufferers: Are any of you still being offered inappropriate (psych/GET etc) "treatments"? Please email george at monbiot dot info. Thanks.

This is *pretty* good info, but if you’re going to send your kid back without serial testing to make sure they’re covid neg, or if they still have any symptoms of any infection, you should be sending them back in a mask if they’re old enough to handle wearing one.
