By saying what I think is a fairly nuanced thing to say about cooling, I appear to have become an unlikely hero of the anti-net-zero crowd. I’m grateful for the enthusiasm. But allow me to point out three ironies.

The rain has stopped, and another #heatwave is forecast next week. There are distant clouds to the north and east, but clear blue skies to the south and west. Dartmoor is visible through modest haze. #WestDevonWx

Like I say, you need to wait for the official word... the data is always provisional and subject to change until final verification/confirmation or rejection.

There are more clouds in the sky over West Devon this morning. According to the current @metoffice.gov.uk forecast there will be some rain here overnight. Dartmoor can be seen more clearly in the distance than of late. #WestDevonWx

The all time record high temperature for South West England is 36 °C, set in Bude during the long hot summer of 2022. That record may well be broken later today, albeit inland rather than on the coast. 🚨🥵 #Drought2026?

Temperatures have continued to climb this afternoon, and we now have a new provisional June record of 36.0 °C, recorded at both Wisley, Surrey and Gosport in Hampshire
Provisionally, today is now the warmest June day on record in the UK, with 35.8 °C recorded at Wiggonholt, West Sussex
On what seems certain to become the hottest day of the year so far, there are now very few clouds in the sky over West Devon. Dartmoor is just about visible through the haze. #WestDevonWx

The Environment Agency has just issued an advice against bathing at East Looe due to a sewage pollution incident. Earlier this evening South West Water also reported a combined sewer overflow activation for the same beach, which may or may not be related. #SewagePollution
It's been a dryer week for Devon and Cornwall, albeit still a long way from totally dry! west-devon.info/2026/01/wint... South West Water’s other reservoirs are now full. Colliford Lake is now following last year’s curve, as is SWW's total reservoir storage. #Drought2026?
