I remember Tim Cain made a video about how Fallout 1 wasn't really about capitalism and everyone called him an idiot and cited 'death of the author' but the actual text of Fallout 1 says extremely little about capitalism, that's mostly transposed on to it from later games

No game with infinite containers can top the emotional rollercoaster moments in Sulfur where you find a whole fucking fridge and have to decide whether to empty out your inventory in the middle of a dungeon to carry it home because man, that IS a lot of storage space

'containers have no limits' is one of those changes elder scrolls made that truly baffles me. You already let people upgrade their player housing with more storage containers. Why make all of them infinite

Enjoy the movie, which was excellent; enjoy the review, which was also excellent. These are not in conflict! Also enjoy comments which scold the review for being nerdy and pretentious, re: a film that obliterated the bombast, comedy, and vitalism of the OG work in favor of monotone self-seriousness

I'm increasingly fond of @polphilpod.bsky.social 's concept of conservativism as the belief that: A) there are natural laws outside of human control that don't and cannot be changed B) people may deviate from them at their peril C) the role of the state is to keep society in line with these laws

Genuine question: is everybody who says Nolan is a conservative because his characters believe they have a moral duty or whatever also self-applying the label (if not why not?), and defining a rhetorical opposite to it (liberal doesn’t capture it, neither does radical, nor reactionary quite)?

food safety regulations probably second only to security regulations in terms of regulations that were explicitly designed to help rich guys and big business that rich guys and big business are constantly trying to destroy for ideological reasons anyway

Something I've been toying with for a while and need to take the time to articulate is that comics and RPGs share a lot of the same special qualities: identification with the inaminate, impact of icons, non-sequentiality, closure.

A page from Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud:
The page argues that humans identify with inanimate objects. For example, if someone hits your car, you say "Hey! He hit me!"A page from Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud: the narrator explains different types of transitions between panels, going from more minute to longer distances of time and space, with types including moment to moment, action to action, and scene to scene.A page from Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud: An illustration of how a single moment in time can be captured by a long panel, but then discussing how that single snapshot is actually several moments strung together--an illustration of nonsequentiality in a single frame.A page from Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud: A comic that can be read differently depending on where you start and where you end, like a choose your own adventure. This illustrations how comic pages have a special quality of reading order.

The earliest preview of Fallout (1997) that I've found yet, from before it even had that name. The GURPS licence that it initially had is first and foremost, with comparisons being drawn more to Wasteland's vibe and how it has more of a 'cyberpunk' flavour. 📖: Next Generation, June 1996

A snippet of an article in the magazine with G.U.R.P.S as the title and a few early screenshots. It's described as being more cyberpunk than anything else at this point.

This is why Fabula Ultima and Goblonia are the best ttrpgs ever made A) Fabula tells players to Seize the Initiative - you get to go first by declaring what you do B) in Goblonia the GM ticks up the Doom Track if the players begin planning and ticks it up again every 5 minutes they spend planning.

one thing i struggle with when playing tabletop rpgs (particularly one shots) is trying to take decisive action to move the story along and then someone else at the table going, "no no no, wait. let's discuss this" and then there's a short, 3-4 min conversation about how to optimally act

look at how awesome this program called "obsidian" is you can just paste screenshots into it and arrange them on a canvas and they snap to each other and you can add notes.... waow

Very partial screenshot map of Maze of Galious with notes about what items are found on each screen

Mean Sonofabitch has lived rent-free in my head for the past 16 years because he was written to have his tongue cut out, but they never told the actor what he's actually meant to be saying SO I FUCKING FIXED HIM Gone are the days of him possessing "bo go" or living in "Wess-ih-bay," now I can rest

i've been stewing on something that bugged me in Fallout: New Vegas for 16 years and today i finally snapped and started work on a mod to fix it

Refusing to engage with a game's systems as a form of its storytelling and overall design is why system-driven games like strategy games, builder games, management sims, and sports games get underserved by media while everyone capes endlessly for AAA single player action games or RPGs.

This industry has a real knack for producing critics that hate gameplay and despise mastery
